MY problems-
I have a library of over 50 VCR Pal 180 tapes collected over 15 years
of videoing athletic Carnivals. These tapes- majority BASF- are
deterioriting mainly from "print through" and base embrittlement. Since
I went digital some 4 years ago, I have transferred most of required
video clips to DVD via my Sony Handycam Digital8 DV camera. After some
3 years of normal outside and transfer use, my Sony has reached UBD-use
by date. The Firewire port is US- broken pin but can be repaired.
Repairing my DV camera is possible- BUT! ALTERNATIVE ?
DVD Recorders are now common and well priced. So went MODERN. For A$350
I purchased a MTV TS-2080 (with a Hard Drive). Somewhat unreliable in
operation, in particular when RECORDING from internal HD onto blank DVD
disks. Have found best blank DVD is TDK+RW 1-4X in both Recorfer and
eMac.
Copying DVD+ RW disk to DVD- via eMac is somewhat "hit or miss". I/O
errors frequently stop transfer to external Firewire Drives using Disc
Utility even though video clips on DVD+ RW play OK in DVD Player and
VLC.
Is running a DVD+ RW a common problem on a Mac ? Any ideas ?
Copying the disc involves error-checking and the operation will
complain if any read errors occur. Playing, on the other hand, just
skips (or tries to) over read errors, most of which are not noticeable
in the player software.
Although I have found TDK media to be very reliable (less than one
failure per 500), I have yet to have a failure with either Taiyo Yuden
or Ritek Ridata discs. Thus, I purchase TDKs when Costco has them on
special a couple of times a year (about $42 for 200); otherwise, I
purchase the better deal between TY and Ritek via online vendors.
I've converted a bunch of home videos from videotape to DVD over the
past six years, but have stuck with either bringing the content in via
DV camera (earlier times) or just playing them through the EyeTV 200
(the past couple of years).
It isn't so much a matter of "...on a Mac" as it is a problem of which
particular DVD drive that computer has. For example, the Pioneer A04
drives (such as were used in my G4 iMac) don't read +R/RW discs at all,
but when I hook the external dual-layer drive to that same iMac, the
discs play fine. Similarly, the combo drive in my Toshiba (Windows)
laptop doesn't recognize dual-layer +R/RW discs, but the Pioneer unit
in the quadCore G5 Mac does.
