the application?

There are huge speed differences between newsreaders running on the Mac
and PC (and probably Linux). Macs are glacial at downloading headers
when opening a newsgroup for reading. I've always assumed that the Mac
operating system was more of a bottleneck than any specific Mac
newsreader application. I've found that a program like Xnews on a PC can
download about over 100,000 headers in the time that it takes Thoth or
MT to download 10,000. In practice, it means that MT or Thoth is set to
open up newsgroups with say 5,000 messages at a time while the PC can
open all the messages in a previously unviewed newsgroup at once. There
always seem to be stops and stalls in the Mac downloading while the PC
traffic is constant. That said, Mac newsreaders are still my first
choice because of their superior user interface.
