Re: [OS 9.2.2] Warcraft III not initializing OpenGL - SOLVED

Hei Eric

OK, I believe the combination of updating software components and activating QD software has solved the problem. When I launch the game, it initially changes the screen resolution to 640x480. I know this because all my desktop icons are moved to where they would be under that resolution, but the screen is switched back to my usual setting of 1280x1024. I can set the game to that screen size in the video controls, but I believe it always initially changes the resolution, based on the two test games I've played.

Good to hear that's beginning to work as it should do.

In the 'Monitor' controlpanel you can change the resulutions manually - or you can do the same from the controlstrip. Both methods will make a dialog occour, where you're asked to click 'YES' or 'NO' to the change, - clicking 'YES' will save the settings, and the next time you change from the controlstrip, the monitor will be set to this resolution without asking to save or not. - And you can also change back to your original settings again from the CSM strip.

I can set all visual details to High, but that makes for painfully slow cursor movement across the screen. I've switched everything down to Medium, and turned Occlusion off, as I don't know what that's for. I'll continue to test game play.

According to which mouse you're using, you can increase the mouse speed in the 'Mouse' controlpanel, or if you're using a Kensington Mouse of a kind, then it must be done in the Kensington Mouseworks application. - And if a Logitech mouse, then use the Mouseware controls settings.

cheers, Erik Richard

:-) But novels also have happy endings - at least sometimes...

This might be our happy ending!

I did the video firmware update on my old B&W G3/900 with the same ATI card but in the PCI version. It made the monitor update better and faster...

I can't access that AGP firmware update. The link doesn't get me anywhere, and I can't find anything on the Web. Please help!

No problems here... I've send it directly to you, so look into your mailbox, - it should be there by now...

Will check that out...

Yes, the one you're thinking of, is the one on the Mac OS 9.0.4 CD. The one I'm linking to is from late 2002. So if you're running it, your machine will tell you, if it's newer or not.

OK, I did the firmware update last night, and it went without a hitch. Didn't even lose my pram settings!

That's good to hear, because I sometimes have seen people having troubles with this update the first time they try.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that all these updates are needed. My computer sat in its original box for over two years while I was overseas and then out of state. That was during most of 2002 - '04.

Two last things came to mind this morning...
- What about the QuickDraw components? Do you have these extensions in your extensions folder:
-[QuickDraw]

I never have any QD components loaded. I'll add 'em into my gaming configuration. Nothing else I do appears to require them.

That's right, since you're using a G4, you don't need these for the printing. - some of the old laserwriters and inkjets use QD, but only those with the round DIN connector - like Laserwriter 300 or the Stylewriter I/II...

Copy that. My printer is an HP Photosmart 1215. It has plenty of software components of its own, and it's USB.

Yes, I use ResEdit frequently. I'll apply the changes you mention here.

One thing you'll really notice is that the unexpected Finder quits will lower radically.

I'd love to make this work, but I'm hesitant to do so after having modified Finder and System memory sizes, and losing the computer's ability to locate a bootable system as a result.

Thanks so much to all who responded, and especially to Erik Richard, for all the help! The effort was well worth it to get the game to work, and now I can report back to Blizzard's tech support with what I hope will be valuable information they can pass along to other customers :)
