One of the options is to email a reply -- I used to be able to do it and
now cannot -- I think it started last weekend maybe, when we got a DSL
connection going. Now when I try to email, I get this:

"An error occurred when NewsWatcher tried to send a command to your mail
server.

NewsWatcher sent the following command:
RCPT TO:<me at my addresst>

The server sent the following response:
550 relaying to <me at my address> prohibited by administrator"

How do I get that feature back to working?

Your headers say you're using MT-NewsWatcher, as I do, so I'll refer you
to the Special menu's Personalities item. There, on the Personal
Details tab, you must provide the mail server for your ISP in order for
MT-NW to be able to send mail. It should be the same as the one you use
in your mail program. The error message you got suggests that it
probably contains the old server from your previous ISP before you got
your new DSL connection. Most, in an effort to keep from being used
freely by spammers, won't allow outsiders to use their servers.

Most SMTP servers will allow sending if you authenticate first. Many
ISPs require authentication even when on their networks, because their
own network accounting processes are too broken to track down any mail
server abuse from their own customers. And if you try to send a message
without authenticating on such a server, one of the possible error
messages is what you saw above.

Unfortunately, MT-NewsWatcher doesn't do SMTP AUTH, so unless you want
to build a tunnel that does the authentication for you, and pretends to
be a mail server listening on localhost, you're SOL. MT-NewsWatcher was
a fine product in its day, and still very usable, but this is one of
those little things that lets you know how old the product is. :-/

There is an option under the "Helper Applications" pane of MT-
NewsWatcher's preferences -- "Use external 'mailto:' helper", that
will handle "mailto" URLs (or if you command-click on anything that
MT-NewsWatcher thinks is an e-mail address in the body of a message).
But this doesn't apply to replies to postings.
