Ah, now I've got it.

Of course, this means that if I mark as "unread" every article that I
tag for download, the number of "unread" articles for a given Group
shown in the MacSOUP Main Window will not necessarily match the number
that I tagged for download in that Group. (My confusion came from
trying to use that number to compare with the number was actually
downloaded to determine if I needed to fetch more often from some groups
so as not to miss scrolled-off messages. Got to get another system.)
