Hi,
I am trying to decide between buying a Powerbook G4 and the MacBook
Pro. (The refurbished powerbook is very attractive). While I read that
the MacBook is much faster than the Powerbook, I am not really
interested in apps that crunch the CPU. I dont intend to do anything
intensive on the portable: only browsing, listening to music, and maybe
transfer photos from the camera to the laptop.
Can someone give me an idea of what the app support will be like? e.g.,
one year from now, will the newest firefox version be released for the
G4 architecture also? (I vaguely recollect Apple saying that they would
support the G4 architecture for 5 years after the Intel macs; so I
guess iTunes will be supported properly.)
At the least, could someone point me to a website that gives an idea
about support for the G4?
Probably, a new PowerBook G4 would serve you well for many years. Apple
has a great reputation of supporting its old hardware for many years. As
far as what will happen one year from now, only someone with a crystal
ball could give you a reliable answer, but check on the web site for
each software package you use and see if they're committed to developing
universal versions of their software.
