Application Icons in Dock

OS 10.4.5, iBook G4
I would like to lighten the clutter in my dock. Can I put folders there
containing the app aliases? E.g., one folder for MS Office apps; a
folder for photo editing apps; etc.
If I can, is it just a matter of creating the folder with the aliases in
it and then moving the folder to the dock? If this is the track does it
matter if some apps are OS9 apps and some are OSX?
I know -- just try it -- but I'm scared. Be nice. I'm old.
Thanks.
