Perhaps I spoke too soon. While the fix you suggested did indeed do the
trick (temporarily), a related phenomenon is happenening, which, taken
in context, makes sense, but doesn't completely solve the problem.

For years I have successfully used QuicKeys and ASM together so that
CTRL-OPTION-CMD-[*] (where [*] means the * key on the numerical kepypad)
as a shortcut to hide the current application. The negative instance I
had described earlier did in fact happen as I was hiding Mail. Now, the
thing is, although I've got color everywhere as I should have, if I
invoke the above-mentioned key command, my screens go negative again.
Invoking the command again returns things to normal color. This happens
even when I've got QuicKeys and/or ASM turned off.

So the mystery is now: Why does that key command turn my screens
negative and how can I work around it. I can't seem to find any way of
changing the key commands for Universal Access, and none matches the
sequence above.

Any followup ideas?

As before ADVthanxANCE for any insight you can provide.

System Preferences, Keyboard & Mouse, Keyboard Shortcuts tab. You'll
find the Universal Access keyboard shortcuts (and all other system-wide
keyboard shortcuts) there. That's where you can change them, or you
could just change the "Hide" command keystroke in QK.
