Ok, thats for all the details. I think Mac at work to Mac at home will
be the easiest solution for a non-techie like me. Do I need Timbuktu or
something like that? I want to be able to access files on my home
machine, open, revise, save them back on the home machine, from work,
in additional to usual things like check mail, ical. If all I have to
do is go to the work Mac, Connect to Server, home ip address. I might
alsowant to do this from a Mac laptop as well as a Mac at work.
If you want to run applications on your home Mac you will need
something like Timbuktu or Apple Remote Desktop - or the free VNC.
Being the admin of a pair of XServe G5 at work, I find ARD really handy.
The tasks you mention however, can be run on the one you are sitting at:
- You can edit documents directly over the network - but I'd strongly
recommend to copy the document, edit and save locally, and copy back.
Just as you would do with a document on a floppy or a flash drive,
right? As I mentioned I do this all the time. Both ways.
- If you use Eudora you can open the remote settings file in your Eudora
Folder - I'm not sure how a similar trick would work in Mail though.
On the other hand you can set up you job Mac (or PC) to check you
home mail too - just make sure that it leaves a copy on the server.
- You can sync iCal through a third device like an iPod, a cell phone -
or if you have one - a .mac account.
Actually, IMO the caution with working on a copy would apply to mail and
iCal as well, since you are in reality editing documents in those cases
too. Remote connections are not 100% stable.
If a VNC/ARD/TB2 connection breaks down however, nothing bad should
happen. You can continue where you left - wherever you are, including
when you come home!

I recommend Macs to my friends, and Windows machines
to those whom I don't mind billing by the hour
