Can VLC read DVD files?

That title is lousy I admit. I'd like to be able to copy the data of a
rented DVD when I don't have time to view it before taking it back, on
to my hard drive, then view it later. I think I used to be able to do
this in Windows VLC. But it won't read them in OSX. I'm not interested
in burning. Just viewing at a later date from the hard drive. Hope
this makes sense.
