I've just come across a strange problem. I'm not sure if it's related to the new year or what, but it's strange. Today, after not updating my 60GB iPod photo for a few days, I got a message in iTunes that said "Some of the songs in the iTunes music library were not copied to the iPod "The Pod" because your iPod software is too old. Go to www.apple.com/ipod to get the latest iPod software update." It seems that my iTMS purchased music isn't being copied over!

I went to that site and couldn't find the update. So instead, I used Software Update on my Mac running 10.4 and got the latest update to the iPod software. I had been ignoring it because supposedly this update is not for the same iPod that I have. I ran the update software and was told that I didn't need to update. I tried plugging my iPod into my computer with my Firewire cable and I got the same message I was getting. I then tried with the USB cable that came with the iPod. This time, I was able to synchronize. Later that evening, though, I tried again with the Firewire and couldn't update. I decided to try reinstalling iTunes. I trashed my old iTunes and re-downloaded the software. I'm still getting this error! I haven't tried again with the USB, that might work. However, the reason I got the Firewire in the first place was so I could charge my iPod while my Powerbook sleeps. You can't do that with USB, the USB interface shuts down.

Has anyone come across this? Any solutions? The best solution I have found so far is this one: http://tinyurl.com/bxevb

However, it requires you to replace a file inside the iTunes package with another version. I'm not really into doing that. Any help would be appreciated. I'm sure I am not the only one whose iTunes program's sticking it to them.

The odd thing about the steps described at that site is step 4-- 'Open Pacifist and extract from the iTunes package the file "iPodDriver.kext"'. As far as I can tell, the iTunes package does not contain this file, making this step impossible.

If it was me, I think I'd be inclined to run the iPod software updater (which should be in your Applications --> Utilities folder). That'll wipe the entire iPod and load the software fresh. You can then re-sync all your iTunes tracks back onto it. I can't be 100% certain it'll work, but it's probably what I'd do next in your position.

I'm reinstalling OS X this evening, so that ought to take care of it. The reinstall wasn't prompted by this, it is just something I was meaning to do anyway. I tried updating the iPod with USB again today, and it works fine with USB, but not Firewire! How bizarre. I think I might have to chalk this up to gremlins. Thanks for the input, Tom.
