How to create a bootable CD/DVD?

I'm feeling a little lost and am hoping that someone's solved this
problem. I posted this to the mac.sys group and haven't received a
response in a week.
I like to carry an emergency disk in case my PowerBook has a problem
while I'm traveling. In the past, I used BootCD to create these, but
BootCD doesn't work under Tiger. I'm getting close, but not quite there.
Here's what I've tried:
On an external drive, I created a DVD-size partition and loaded 10.4.3
and all the utilities I wanted. I verified that it boots my machine,
that all the programs work, and that the System Preferences are set
properly. Mine is the only account on that system.
Then I used Disk Utility to create a disk image and backed the partition
up using SilverKeeper. I then burned the image DVD with Disk Utility.
I've tried this with images formatted as writtable (.dmg) and as CD/DVD
masters (.cdr). So far so good.
The machine boots off the DVD...BUT: it stops at a Darwin Console prompt
and asks me to logon. I've tried entering my account's full and short
names on that boot volume and the password. No luck. So I'm stuck.
I get the same results whether I backup to the disk images when I'm
booted from my normal partition and when I boot from the desired
"emergency" partition, and the result is the same. I've also tried
burning a DVD of the original partition using Toast, but that doesn't
work at all. I've also tried using Xupport to do the backup to my disk
image, but the results are the same as with SilverKeeper.
I've searched the Apple Discussions forums and a number of OS X books I
have and they don't touch this subject.
Does anyone know how to do this? All I want is the latest OS X as the
boot OS, and then have DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, etc., on that disk.
BootCD did it just the way I want. I know there's got to be a simple way
of doing this, even if it's from the command line.
Thanks in advance,
Abbott
