Re: mystery error message in Apple "Pages"

Hei Randy

Recently I noticed (I don't use it much) that Pages will complain on startup loading a document that it can't find the Arial font.

Oh no, not Arial again....:-(

Arial is my prefered font for normal work, since this font is one of the best to read for visually impaired, and a good part of my work is related to this group of people...

This is silly, since I use Arial in various apps all over the system, including NewOffice/J. Yet, Pages complains. It didn't when originally installed, so I'm curious if anyone has seen this and/or has pointers on how to track it down.

Yes, it is silly, but unfortunately true. I surpose that you're using the Microsoft version of Arial - not the ITC Arial MT version. There are heavy problems with the MS version on both OS 9.x and OS X 10.3.x and 10.4.x. And it isn't in Pages alone this problem occours from time to time. I have noticed it in NisusWriter 6.5.xClassic, NisusWriter Express 2.x, AWKS 6.2.9 - both in OS 9.x and in X. - Even using it in OpenOffice 2.0 as well as MSWord 10.1.6 sometimes give problems.

I also have noticed it in other textprocessors. And also when copying a text that already is written in Arial and then pasting it into a new document. - Here the font menu doesn't show that the text is written in Arial.

I only get the problems, if I'm using the MS version of Arial TT. - If I instead switch to 'Arial Unicode.ttf' or ITC Arial MT when running OS X or the ITC Arial MT when running OS 9.2.2, the problem is gone.

So I can only recommend that you use the latest version of either the MS Arial - at least ver. 2.60 or higher - or the Arial Unicode.ttf. Unfortunately it's no longer possible to download the Arial Unicode freely from the MS sites.

Regarding the problems in Pages, I can't help you, - I just got Pages the day before yesterday, so I haven't had the time to explore it yet. - So the only recommendation I can give is the usual - delete the .plist file belonging to Pages and relaunch the program and make a fresh set of prefs settings...

Hope this helps you a bit...
cheers, Erik Richard
