I like computers (Macs, that is) just as much as the next person. Call
me old-fashioned, but I think many people push their kids to grow up too
fast. (I'm not saying you are.) It used to be okay to start reading
around four or five. Now some people are planning what daycare center
and college their (not yet conceived) kids will attend. And because
computers are fun, most kids probably look at them as toys first and
foremost, rather than serious, powerful machines. Maybe the novelty has
worn off for most kids, but I noticed, back in the 80s when my daughter
was in elementary school, that her playmates tended to think any
computer was fair game for playing with. They'd walk in after school and
just start playing with my computer without asking. Where my husband
works, his co-workers' two kids come in every day after school till
their mother is finished with work. They "play" on my husband's computer
every time he's gone from his desk for more than five minutes. He had to
start unplugging the mouse whenever he left because he'd come back to
sticky keyboard and desk full of cookie crumbs. Even if they didn't
leave a mess, they shouldn't be allowed to "play" with the computers
there.
