The popup blockers in most web browsers worked to stop javascript
based popups.
When this style of blocking got popular and effective, the
advertisers switched to using other means of creating popups.
Flash is one of the more common these days.
Then Flash Blockers were developed. Now some advertisers have
found ways around those.
Effectively we have an "Arms Race" going on. Blockers vs
Advertisers.
Mostly I get by using Flashblock on Firefox as well as enabling
the popup blocking preferences. I still get an occasional popup
(or pop under), but mostly they just leave me alone.
And as for the anaimated GIFs, after the web page has loaded, I
can hit <esc> on the keyboard, and that stops the GIFs from
cycling.
