The reason this can be tough is because AVIs are containers, not a movie type
in and of themselves. So you might have a Divx AVI or an H.264 AVI or who
knows what else. Here's a website that explains the mystery pretty well.

I've found that downloading the Divx codec has solved much of my AVI woes.

It's not perfect yet (Quicktime still won't play those MST3K episodes I get
off alt.binaries.multimedia.mst3k) but it's saved me a lot of grief. I find
that with this codec installed, the Divx Doctor program, VLC, and MPlayer, I
can watch 95% of the videos I want to watch.
