As you don't know what a business model how can you be expected to
grasp why it rightfully would enter the conversation with "any rigor"?
What is MS's laptop market share number? Do you know? Oh... they don't
make laptops, you say? Well... what is their desktop market share?
They don't make desktops? How about their expandable tower market
share? What? They don't make any of those, either?! Fer crissakes...
they make an OS... aren't they confident in their ability to make
stuff to run the damn thing on? I mean... even people like you are
putting them together in their mommy's basement. Geez... what cowards
they are!

Bzzt. Apple could still make machines, for those who wanted that
extra reliability. The "PC" version of OS X could be a distinct
product, as I have said.

Wow.

You're so smart, why don't you start your own successful personal
computer business?

And while you're doing that, find one that's been in business longer
than Apple.

I think Apple mice from the last few years have not been ones that serve my
needs well at all (though I have not used the most recent). Should I not
state that as an opinion unless I can show I have a bigger, longer lasting
computer company than Apple?

If you disagree with Joel by all means argue against his points... but
please try to use reason and logic as you do so.
