By the fact that you can get a complete computer from Dell for less than half the price you can from Apple.

The Dell has a slower processor, slower drive, lower resolution screen,
and lower video support.

Actually all of those things are immeasurably faster than there are in any new computer you can buy from Apple for the same price.

Any processor is faster than no processor. Any hard drive is bigger and faster than no hard drive. Any screen has better resolution than no screen.

For $500 Apple has no new computer to sell you.

But it would still be a really decent system for that price --
if it was running Mac OS X.

Yes, it still would be a decent system even if you hobbled it with Mac OS X.
