"As students head to school this fall, many are choosing Macs
for
their
academic and recreational computing, with more than one third
of
respondents
(36%) in a survey of full-time undergraduates at four-year US
colleges
and
universities indicating they plan to purchase a Mac(1).
However,
a
significant number of student Mac users still want to be able
to
run
Windows
or PC-based applications, for example for a specific course
element
such
as
Autocad for engineering or architecture degrees, and many
solve
this
problem
with Parallels Desktop for Mac."

If your survey is correct, almost two thirds of students
don't
want
Macs,
and of those who do, "a significant number" of them will be
running
Windows.

( A significant percentage which goes to the Macs
increasing
market
share )

"On April 22, 2009 Apple reported earnings for its fiscal
2009
second
quarter
that ended on March 28, 2009. Although Apple's CFO commented
that
the
quarter was "the best non-holiday quarter revenue and
earnings in
our
history", Mac shipments were the lowest in 1.5 years and
experienced
their
first year-over-year (year/year) drop in 5.5 years."

People can say anything on a survey. The dollar vote is
what
counts.

I agree

Apple's revenues were up....however let's look at Dell....

"Revenue was down 22 percent from a year ago, but higher that
what
analysts were expecting. Adjusted profits per share were 28
cents,
5
cents higher than analysts had forecast."

And HP's revenue was down.....

Okay, we already knew that Apple computers cost more and that
Apple
has
the highest margin in the industry for hardware.

How does that answer the fact almost two thirds of students don't
buy
Macs, and that of those who do, a significant number will be
running
Windows on their Macs?

How do you know that, Edwin?

I read the thread and the referenced article, Brian.

Or should I call you "Pratt-fall?"

Sorry, but the referenced article said "want", not will.

So you recognize a survey doesn't count as higher Mac sales. Good for
you.

Of course I recognize that, Edwin. I deal in facts.

LOL

Riiiiiight, Brian!

You, yourself in the very same post to which I replied made the
observation that what people want is not always what they end up with.

I made no such observation. I asked how quoting revenue figures changes
the fact most students don't want Macs, and of those who do, will be
using them to run Windows.

Actually, your observation was even more emphatic:

I asked a question, I didn't make an observation, Pratt-fall.

"How do you even know if those who said they would buy Macs actually will
buy Macs? Usually it's the parents that have to pick up the tab, and
they may not be as willing to choose Mac over PC as their kids are!"

In other words, more than saying that wanting doesn't become actually
buying, you said that even stated intentions don't become actual buying.

Keep your words to yourself, don't put them in my mouth! I was asking
how a survey can be counted as if it were actual sales, and I gave a
reason why the sales may fall short of the survey results.

And I then gave the same reason for why a significant number of people
wanting Windows won't necessarily translate into a significant number
actually doing so.
