The reboot timeout is easy to replicate:

<http://tmp.gallopinginsanity.com/timeout.mov>

The fact even something this simple is a debating point in CSMA is
sad...
come on Mac users, do not lie and deny in order to make OS X sound
better.
This is a common and easy to replicate situation.
Point one... shut down the app. Who doesn't before a restart?
More of a BSD policy. It isn't the policy of SYSV tho.
No one is lying here, but demenas credibility is very shaky.
I tend to take people at their word, except in extreme examples of
people
who have proved they are not to *ever* be trusted - the situation he
described is a reasonable one to run into.

But I've never ran into any of his posted situations. Not on OS X or
any other UNIX.
Cannot speak to other situations, not without details anyway, but the
situation here I have seen often... and was able to easily replicate.

OS X first issues from launchd a SIGTERM to all processes, then a SIGKILL
to
all processes. I've yet to see any process not stop from a SIGKILL.
That's
why I think he is just looking for anything to diss Apple. But mention
one
negative thing about Windows, and he is there Johnny on the spot to
defend
it.
I am not defending the idea he has not bias... just noting this issue is
real.

I suspect something else that could probably be a problem, but I've
never seen any process
escape a SIGKILL command. The process table may have gotten corrupted,
but that would
have to be in memory. Faulty ram perhaps?

The one place where his story is fishy, to me, is the time frame. Wally
pointed out where I missed that.

I didn't read all the posts. Time frame?

The dialog generally comes up about 90 seconds after you try to restart - he
gave a much lesser time frame (I would have to check, but it was less than
half that).

Don't bother checking Snit, after all it involves facts and you know how
much you hate those.....

Here you are...

"But if I have apps loaded it never restarts. After 15-20 seconds it tells
me that Application "x" has stopped (aborted) the restart. I have to then
manually exit out of Application "x" and do the restart again, and hope that
it actually goes through and that another app won't stop the restart."
-Steve de Mena

You should also note that his use of "Application "x"" instead of naming a
specific app at that time is a good indication that he has seen this
phenomenon on more than one occasion and with more than one app hence his
comment...

"It occurred to me tonight that this menu option has really never
worked for me."

and

"But if I have apps loaded it never restarts."

Others have pointed out a more likely cause other than the one he alludes
to!

I missed that... Wally pointed it out. I, of course, admitted
to the error. Then Wally and Carroll mocked me for doing the right thing...
business as normal. :)

Stop playing the victim anyone who states such things as those shown below
has no business riding a high horse Snit! ....

"If you want to call someone on BS, at least make sure it is BS. The shut
down issue he talks about is almost trivial to replicate:

<http://tmp.gallopinginsanity.com/timeout.mov>

Why is this even a debate? Does anyone really deny OS X does this?"-Snit

The person that you wrote that to was correct and you were wrong to question
him on his comment, and your conclusions were totally wrong! I must have
missed your apology to that poster!

"I tend to take people at their word, except in extreme examples of people

described is a reasonable one to run into."-Snit

As you say ... You take people at their word, unfortunately you repeatedly
prove that you do not understand what their word even is and you end up
making incorrect statements as you do above, as such you fall into the very
category of poster that you mention "people who have proved they are not to
*ever* be trusted".

"Cannot speak to other situations, not without details anyway, but the
situation here I have seen often... and was able to easily replicate.

I am not defending the idea he has not bias... just noting this issue is

You clearly demonstrate in the above that not only can you not speak of
situations without details, but you cannot speak accurately on situations
where all the details are presented Snit!
