Looks like a lot more to me.
HP has a more diversified product line than Apple has.
Inkjet printers, laser printers, cameras, UNIX workstations, and many large government contracts.
Take these out of their profit earnings and you'll find a much smaller bottom line.
The double standard?

Take away the iPod.
Take away the iPhone
Take away Apple TV.
Take away iTunes.

Bottom line - More is Better.

Of course. But those government contracts is what is keeping HP propped up.
Mind you they make damn good PCs, it is just that I feel that most people can now no longer afford them.

Sure, lots of people make damn good PCs. My work gave me a 17" HP 8710W Laptop. Its a gorgeous machine. Well, made, lots of USB I/O on both sides of the computer, both a touchpad and a "Thinkpad" style pointing device, Direct inputs for SD cards, built-in Wi-Fi etc. Unfortunately, when I turn it on, I get an ancient wheezing DOS screen and eventually it boots into Windows XP. Bah! Ruins the entire computer. Turns it into what might as well be a boat anchor. Junk.
If you are seeing DOS screens when Windows XP boots up than your credibility has gone out the window.

Steve
What do you call a black screen with green block letters? Looks like it's about to boot into DOS. Then I get a big box in the middle of said black screen asking for my machine password - looks like a dialog box from DOSShell fer crissake! (this is something the company requires). Then it boots into XP (eventually).
That is standard VGA startup screen before windwoes starts up. It has been the graphical standard
for DOS startup screens for windwoes for a long time.

My point exactly. It reminds me how many DOS conventions are STILL left in Winblows after all these years.

What would you do? Immediately go into a high-rez graphics mode that couldn't be guaranteed to be supported on the 17 million video card combinations out there. Smart move.

All it means is that the IBM VGA standard still rules and is also archaic now.
