Yeah, according to iSuppli AppleTV actually makes money per unit
sold.  There is no way of knowing whether the XBox makes money since
MS's E&D division includes the Zune, and the Mac Business Unit.

that's some apples-oranges comparison dude... isupply provides
component breakdown costs, and yes, the appletv's component breakdown
is less than suggested retail. but that doesn't include the costs to
bring it to retail (when they sell direct) or the markdowns that
retailers get. isupply also estimates the breakdown costs for the
xbox to be below retail (and has for a couple years- it estimated it
to be initially a money loser). according to your 'logic,' there's no
way to know if appletv actually makes any money either, as apple lumps
it all in together with everything else.

All through my life I remember criticism from mostly conservative elements about all of our "stupid, wasteful, inefficient" government programs (because private industry is always smart, efficient, etc.) and yet there are tons of examples where a govt program, and funding, were made available and private industry managed to morph the whole program into a boodle fund whereby corporations made a lot of money and nothing ever came out of it. ...
