Just another highly tested, high quality QC job by Apple. Maybe theyGot a gray screen total crash a few days ago on my Mac Pro when
can't afford their own computers so they aren't testing their patches
at all?
The amusing part is; they have been passing off the BSOD as a Windows
problem, when it's been their problem for years.
running DiskWarrior (3rd party utility) after Apple's built-in Disk
Utility was UNABLE - read UNABLE - to correct problems on my Startup
volume. Sad.
Steve
as clockwork.
My update on my iMac and mini went as usual. No problems at all.
fine on three systems, though one now has a different screen saver and
the Mac Pro rebooted like 3-4 times.
Maybe you can help explain why OS X's Disk Utility failed in its
ability to fix my hard drive problem, while DiskWarrior did?
Steve
After looking over your log, I don't have an answer. Except that it
refers to a RAID situation. Is disk utility the right tool for a RAID
config?
Disk Utility can fix RAID volumes, yes.
Is Steve really pretending to be shocked that a utility which costs
nearly as much as the entire operating system, and completely rebuilds
directory structures by examining the contents of disks, can repair
issues that the free directory fixing utility included with the
operating system can't?
Yes, because (to expand on this some more), the corruption probably
occurred when I had to hit the big power button and shut down the
system abruptly 2-3 times due to system lockups. This would have
been fixed easily by CHKDSK on a Windows or Windows Server system. We
never used anything but the builtin Windows Server CHKDSK utility
maintaining thousands of Windows servers. So, yes, I would expect Disk
Utility to have fixed this, or given some sort of better error message
as to what the problem was that it could not fix. Incidentally, I did
have to use DiskWarrior's Directory rebuild feature.
I don't feel the Apple file system is as tolerant to sudden power off
shutdowns as NTFS is.
Steve
I've not had an issue with Apple's file system breaking more than Disk
Utility can fix yet.
And NTFS is a very good FS imo. I never had issues with it either.
