I have no reason to believe the reason these people cannot get their
software to work with Vista is FUD.

Perhaps she blames Vista because of the FUD.

But never mind. I am sure your 'user' will continue to say whatever you cannot defend yourself. Perhaps she will say that Matlab is a 64-bit on OS X, too.

[snip]
It is. I and all users of current Macs (and ones from the last couple of
years even) can run 64 bit software.

What 64-bit software can you run?

In the past I have shown you 64 bit software I *am* running.

I seem to recall that this amounted to Apache. And sometimes Chess.app.

[snip]
But this new "XP Mode" thing does address one of Microsoft's 64-bit
weaknesses: the "16-bit or 64-bit, choose one" thing.

Why did they not have this in Vista?

Presumably they did not think it was necessary.

To many users it will show MS having little faith in Win 7.

I think that only Mac-fans will feel this way.

With Apple, they had a backwards compatibility
thingy in OS X *as* they transitioned... not added on later when it became
clear their current tech was not working with the old stuff.

Apple did the minimum backwards compatibility they could get away with, and took it away again as soon as they dared.

Microsoft's was better from the start, and is being improved.

[snip]
You can certainly point to aspects of Apple's efforts that seem like they
should make 64-bit work better for them. But it hasn't _worked_; the 64-bit
software is just not there.

Some of it *comes* with OS X. Hard to say it is not "there".

Chess.app and Apache again?

And for most
Windows users they cannot even run 64 bit software... it simply will not
work on their 32 bit Windows. Oh, and here is a list of some 64 bit
software that runs on the standard OS X version: Grass, Imagine,
Mathematica, Matlab, SAS, Stata and Suddan.

That's pretty weak. From googling, Matlab is not 64-bit; they are working on it, and it is in beta for release this year. But it is not there yet.

iMagine also seems to not be 64-bit. The iMagine website doesn't make this explicit, but they don't seem to mention 64-bit anything either. They do say iMagine is a 'universal binary', which (last I heard) meant PPC+Intel.

SAS is a Classic app, and not even runnable anymore, still less 64-bit.

Grass GIS is a Unix port, and the native UI is 'experimental'; but you can use X-Windows if you don't like experimenting. I would not call this a "Mac app", even at a stretch. Maybe when the native UI is ready.

Stata is a little more credible, but it's a bit like have a 64-bit port of Mathematica, if you see what I mean. Still, its better than pointing to Apache as your exemplar. :D

I can't find anything at all about "Suddan", I'm afraid.
