documentations says how it is supposed to work, yet the API works
differently, you've got problems.

can shake a stick at. Some APIs have bugs, which is why they have
workarounds.
They'd rather tell you a workaround rather than fix their APIs and do
better documentation.

Yes and no. They make you go through that terrible process of downloading, yes. As to Visual Studio Express being a "hobbyist toy" I disagree.
