Do some googling on this and you'll find every suggestion under the sun to resolve this. It's almost funny.

Steve

I did some Googling, and I only found the same solutions that Apple and others recommended, not "every suggestion under the sun"--defragmenting the drive, freeing more space on the OS X partition, or (as a last resort) reinstalling the operating system in a non-defragmented state.

I guess I would suggest you remove "Google" from your resume for the list of apps you know.

"This is very odd. I'd check with Apple about what's going on if I could in your position. It sounds like an issue with the drive, not with Boot Camp."

"Boot from the OS X disc and verify the volume with Disk Utility. If the drive can't be repaired there, you either need a 3rd party option or to simply format and reinstall." [I like the "you need a 3rd party option". For WHAT?]

"How much space did you free up, and more importantly, how much was there before you started and when you finished? BootCamp wants a minimum of 10GB according to the documentation...."

"Just booting from the install disc to repair the disc and even repair permissions does nothing on the 50 macs I administer here at my University Lab.

The only solution I found after actually tinkering with the problem is of course to use DiskWarrior then clone the drive then clone back then and only then was I able to use the bootcamp app to partition the drive."

"I would presume you are trying to do this on a Hackintosh?
If so Bootcamp does NOT work on a Hackintosh!
If it's on the Machine you have in your SIG, then it will be an issue of having it in MBR!" [he has a Mac]

"In the installation instructions for BootCamp it says:

Important:
You must use a single full-install Windows installation disc (Service Pack 2
is required for XP installations). Do not use an upgrade version of Windows and do not install an earlier version of Windows XP and attempt to update it later to SP2. Use only 32-bit versions of Windows.

When I first tried Bootcamp without reading the instructions, I used XP SP1 thinking I'd upgrade at the end. But it didn't work."

"I'd first restore your HDD to a single partition (with Bootcamp-assistant), maybe delete or move something to an external disk. Then start again the Bootcamp-Assistant. If you get the message again, which claims, that some files couldn't be moved, make a smaller partition-even 5 GB will be enough!"

"well obviously this case is unique and unsolvable without me having to spend £70+ for a 250gb hd."

"I got the same message, but when I removed some data from the disk it worked. Before buying something you don't really need, I'd try to free your disc and move data (Music, Videos and Pictures) to DVD's etc. and then try it again.
However, an external disc is a good spending I really recommend having a backup disc "just for the case" ."

"At this point if booting off of the OS X install dvd and repairing the volume won't work I would seriously consider calling apple support for guidance. This could be some bad sectors on the HDD also sadly not all HDD's are perfect"

"I was not about to do a backup of my hard-drive and re-install OS X, so I went searching for the solution. Found it here. It turns out that if you have some large files on your hard drive (I had several multi-gigabyte movie files and some DV video of the kiddoes), Boot Camp will time out (then error out) while moving the files." [I actually think this was my problem, and not what you claim]

Sure looks like people are giving out "every idea under the sun". Care to take back your remark?

And this is only the first page of Google results.

Just as a said.
