Why should anyone accept a 3 application limitation?

To save $15 or something. It doesn't make a lot of sense. If Microsoft
is smart enough to make the upgrade a matter of five minutes on their
web site (you give them a credit card number, they zap the app
limitation), I suppose it won't inconvenience people too horribly.

It does nicely demonstrate how just little priority Microsoft places on
user experience, though. Apple doesn't like to sell a cheaper product if
they can't make it good, while Microsoft has chosen to introduce a
cheaper product that is *deliberately* worse than it needs to be.

It's called giving people a choice. What do you think people use
netbooks for, wouldn't many never even notice that 3-app application
limit? I wouldn't be surprised if that edition is virtually free.

The problem here is that most people don't really make very informed
purchasing decisions when buying computers (especially, I'm guessing,
$250 netbooks), and almost nobody would choose this option if they did
make an informed purchasing decision.

This is purely a ploy to get rid of the (already largely trivial)
advertised price difference between Linux and Windows netbooks, at the
expense of user experience.
