Try and find OpenVMS on HPs website. That is my only complaint about HP.
I think they are actually trying to ignore what they purchased. The only way to find
OpenVMS is thru the govt. tab on the front page and then selecting workstations.
No pricing is advertised. They want you to give them your phone number and have rep call back.
The Compaq line used to be good a long time ago, but HP really cheapened them up to the point
of unsaleability.
HP pretty much dumped Tru64-UNIX in favor of HP-UX.
It's worth noting that Compaq was the company that bought out
DEC. I had worked for a company previously gobbled up by Compaq
(Tandem) and the DEC people never really fit in well with the
Compaq culture (neither did the Tandem folk for that matter) In
any case, the DEC Alpha was the first thing to go....they just
could not continue to compete. It was a blazing fast architecture
for its time and Tru64 was very interesting. I think the only reason
that OpenVMS even exists is because VMS customers will not let VMS
die.
Part of that is due to the large government contracts that DEC had originally,
and as gov employees go, won't change.
Also worth noting, HP's PA-RISC is also gone.
I know. HP put an awful lot of money into Intel to develop the IA64. I haven't
kept up with it tho.
HP-UX, IIRC, was
SVR4 based and not a huge seller for HP. As far as Compaq, they have
built good products and real dogs. I look every once in awhile at some
of the HP and Compaq laptop offerings and they really are not very good.
I concur. I really don't like their laptop line. If I had to buy a laptop, I'd
probably go with Toshiba.
Same for Dell etc. There's a huge tradeoff when companies bet a lot on
maintaining numbers by selling based on lowest cost. You really do get
what you pay for to a degree. I have no money to buy these days, but I
have seen the new aluminum MacBooks and MacBook Pros and they make my
late 2006 MBP 17" look clunky by comparison.....they are gorgeous.
I got a MacBook for my Grandsons birthday. I asked him which laptop he wanted.
He wanted the MacBook. I asked why not a windows laptop? No way, was his
response. Sounds like he and his friends and at school don't care much for
windows.
