Displaying BoomTown¹s advanced age and elephantine cache of
meaningless tech memories, after news yesterday that the
software giant was plunging into the retail market, I was
surprised to find little mention that Microsoft¹s last store
effort ended in failure in 2001.

And Microsoft¹s one previous retail experiment, the
microsoftSF store in San Francisco¹s Metreon Sony
Entertainment Center, survived only a couple of years before
closing in 2001. But the company is convinced that its
problem is not with products, but preconceptions, and it
seems determined to fight that battle hand-to-hand.

And Microsoft CEO (then President) Steve Ballmer weighed in
enthusiastically:
³We are delighted to be able to showcase in this
one-of-a-kind retail environment the entire range of
Microsoft software and hardware, as well as the
technology of other companies who share the vision of how
the PC and the Internet can empower people any time,
anywhere. San Francisco and the Silicon Valley are home
to the world¹s largest and one of the most sophisticated
high-tech audiences, so this was the natural place to
create this sitededicated to showing, in an interactive
environment, the way technology can enhance our working,
learning, living and playing.²
Not so much, as it turned out. The store closed in 2001.

Experts and industry analysts however, was not impressed with
this news. They believe that Microsoft has taken a bad
decision. In 1999, Microsoft first opened its retail store,
microsoftSF, in San Francisco. It was an 8,500 square foot
retail shop at the Metreon shopping center. The store
displayed more than 160 hardware and software products.
Unfortunately, the store did not do well and microsoftSF was
shut down in 2001.

Maybe MS will do better this time, but clearly their last attempt was a
failure.
States the guy that has proven that he doesn¹t understand that "business
priorities" changing and failure are not synonymous concepts!
"We are partnering with Sony on different things and will continue to do so,
but we mutually agreed to close the store because it no longer fit the
company's core business priorities," said a Microsoft representative."
( note:... "mutually agreed" ... Think about that!)
http://tinyurl.com/d83cog
The space is owned and operated by Sony Retail Entertainment (SRE).

"The Xbox is a sixth-generation video game console produced by Microsoft
Corporation. It was Microsoft's first foray into the gaming console market,
and competed directly with Sony's PlayStation 2 and Nintendo's GameCube. It
was released on November 15, 2001"
When was it that MS pulled out of its retail store, microsoftSF, in San
Francisco.?

November 2001? Coincidence? LOL
And from a Snit provided link wrt the new stores....
"And, in this effort, Microsoft will have control of the whole enchilada."
That fact is far more relevant than an opinion of failure backed up by no
evidence!
Clearly to Snit when "business priorities" change *that* is a sign of
failure!
Ooop's Sony a failure?...

"Speaking with GameSpot, a Sony rep said, "Our lease with the Metreon for
the PlayStation Store will expire this summer and we have chosen not to
renew it." (A rep for the Metreon told GameSpot that the Sony Style Store's
lease will expire on March 31st.) "
Oh no! Sony is changing it's "business priorities" It'd doomed, doomed I
tell you! LOL
Hint: Sony ? Microsoft. Please *try* to speak on the topic being discussed.
I felt satisfied with your admitted total capitulation on the subject Snit,
... But your white flag waving is a nice touch! thank you! :)
lost you always are.
Keep in mind that *clearly* MS had a plan for its store that *failed* in
2001. Failed. And Steve Mackay tried to push the idea that Apple, with
their vastly successful store strategy, was copying MS's failed efforts with
a single store.
You and your co-trolls can try to spin this however your want, but you had
better be creative if you want my continued attention (as you clearly do).
Frankly you are already just getting boring. Far, far too predictable.
