Since Macs are now PCs capable of running Windows, some will install Windows and use it as their main OS on the system. So it's pretty silly to think those numbers are very accurate.
Does anyone know how little it really is?Apple shifted 2,496,000 Macs (with Leopard installed, obviously) in the
That number is a deep, dark secret. With good reason.
3rd quarter of 2008.
<http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2008/07/21results.html>
During this same period, 80,564,700 PCs were shipped worldwide.
<http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=777613>
Therefore, by means of extrapolation, during this period, the Mac held a
3.1% market share, which is *DOWN* from 3.2% and 3.3% the previous two
quarters.
However, during this same period, the Mac held a 9.5% market share in
the US, which is *UP* from 8.5% and 6.6% the previous two quarters.
So that's a US share now over *3 times* as much as the worldwide share,
as the world and US share head in opposite directions. Curious. For
the group's continued amusement, would you care to speculate why that
might be?
John
I seriously doubt that the percentage of Mac buyers doing what you indicate is, in any way, significant. They may install Windows in ADDITION to OSX, but few would buy a Mac, remove OSX and replace it with an inferior OS like Windows or Linux. What would be the point? It would be like buying a new Rolls-Royce and replacing the leather seats with aluminum folding lawn chairs.
LOL! Pretty much my assessment as well.
The Rolls Royce versus other PCs analogy is flawed, in that they all use the same components, and all made in China.
Except that you missed one critical component... the operating system.
Made in the U.S.A.
Plus all of the development tools are included. So as far as what you are getting in the deal,
it is a wash.
Buy a Vista PC and you have to acquire the development tools seperately.
Plus you don't have to buy any Anti-Virus software for OS X.
Why would your average user need "development tools"?
They wouldn't, but it is a strong selling point for those that do.
All 0.1%
And if you want the equivalent in Apples tools, you'd have to buy MS professional level
to get about the same thing, which is another $600 or so extra.
You don't have to buy AV software for Vista either, there are free alternatives.
Not according to CNET.news in regards to anti-virus software.
I notice that all PCs that are equipped with Vista also come equipped with
Anti-virus software. And in the case it is a yearly purchase.
There are free anti-virus products available - fact. (Such as AVG) Not sure what "CNET" has to say about this.
And Microsoft's previous fee-based "OneCare" will be replaced by a free product, with malware and anti-virus, shortly.
