"Yesterday Ed Bott put numbers to the ³Apple tax² and came to the bottom
line conclusion that switching to Apple would be ³in the ballpark of
$500.² Sure, he put together a vaguely straw man argument in places, and
chose to pick commercial Mac software where free software existed,
but overall his argument is pretty solid."

I bought a tiny little Acer Aspire notebook (10" X 7" X 1.14", <2.2 Lb). It
comes with 1 Gig of DDR2 RAM, built-in Wi-fi, a 120 Gig HDD, built-in media
card reader, PCMCIA/Flash Memory slot, Built-in Web Cam, microphone, etc.
It's beautifully made of really high quality polycarbonate plastic, has a
nice keyboard with a great feel and comes with XP installed. The price?
Around $350. First of all Apple doesn't make a machine that small, and the
nearest Apple laptop in weight (3 pounds vs 2.2) is the MacBook Air and it's
5 TIMES the price of this Acer. Also, the cheapest MacBook is almost 3X the
price of this little computer (and weighs twice as much). I have installed
another Gig of DRAM for ~$18, and have a PCMCIA Firewire card on order for
$20. Originally, I had planned to install OSX on the little thing, but since
I only bought it as DAW for audio capture, I think that I'll leave it be and
just install Audacity on it. Now, I don't LIKE Windows and OSX is FAR, FAR
superior, but it should do the job (although I don't know how well. Windows
lacks the system-level audio enabling technology (Core-Audio) that OSX has),
but I suspect that it will suit my needs adequately.
