Barriers to Macintosh adoption are collapsing
By Vin D'Amico
Apple is finally making serious inroads into corporate networks. The
Macintosh is no longer viewed as an arts and crafts project. Meanwhile,
Microsoft is under increasing pressure to respond to the criticism that
Windows Vista has endured.
Macs are generally more stable and virus resistant than Windows. They
are easier to use and built on open standards. Maybe it is time to test
the barriers to Mac adoption in your company.
Yes, I can confirm this from my own consultancy experience. Two of my larger clients illustrate the problem nicely.
Client 1 (in the middle of a massive website re-development) has in the last year brought in something like 30-40% of the computers in the office as Macs. These are being used for web software development and general business productivity. Definitely not "creative" folk (apart from a small team of graphic designers) - just hard-nosed calculating business folk who realised that there was a better way to get productive. They are seeing clear and immediate benefits in terms of usability, lack of worries over security, viruses and malware, and that's not even considering the huge benefits they will see in fewer support issues and better quality hardware.
Client 2 is also in the midst of rapid change with a host of IT projects, but are fully Windows-based. Owing to major problems with Vista they are on XP and with no plans to go anywhere else, and owing to major security problems with this operating system their machines are totally locked-down for end users. By moving to Mac OS X they could achieve all of the security they seek without disadvantaging their poor benighted users, but their IT function is out-sourced and there is no prospect of such a thing coming from their provider.
Both clients could benefit from using Macs in the enterprise, but only one is making it a reality.
