FWIW, this isn't an Apple-vs-Dell advocacy thing, for the same basic
dilemma exists with Apple's Firewire ports: if they're not
realistically to be used, their inclusion represents an unnecessary
expense.
Most of the expense of a port is the connector, right? What would be
cool would be for someone to make a port switching chip, that can be
hooked up to the system's Firewire and USB and SATA and audio buses on
one side, and that is hooked up to a bunch of special sockets on the
other side, which are exposed on the case.
If you need a USB port, you can plug a special USB receptacle into one
of these sockets. The switching chip would sense that a USB receptacle
is in the socket, and would connect that socket to the system's USB bus.
If you need a Firewire port, you plug in a Firewire receptacle, and so
on.
Now the system maker doesn't have to guess how many USB ports and how
many Firewire ports and so on that they should put on. They just put a
few of these special sockets on, and the user can decide what the
distribution of ports should be.
