You Know Microsoft Are Dying When... (was Re: Windows XP SP3 Sows Havoc, Users Complain)

.... It's not safe to upgrade Microsoft software anymore.

Vista, yeah we know that story. The enterprise still absolutely
refuses to allow the monstrosity into their offices.

But Windows XP?!
Sure, SP3 will make XP better!
.. . . NOT!

Windows XP SP3 Sows Havoc, Users Complain

outright system crashes.

Within hours of its release, Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)'s Service Pack 3 for
Windows XP began drawing hundreds of complaints from users who claim the
update is wreaking havoc on their PCs.

The problems with XP SP3, according to posters on Microsoft's Windows XP
message board, range from spontaneous reboots to outright system crashes.

Continuous Reboots Plague Windows XP SP3 Users
By Chloe Albanesius

What are you doing this weekend? How about watching your PC continually
reboot? That's what some aggravated Windows XP users have been doing Friday
after installing the XP service pack 3 (SP3).

The problem appears to primarily affect AMD-based computers, though there are
also some cases in which Intel-based machines will also run into trouble,
Jesper Johansson, a former program manager for security policy at Microsoft
who now runs a Windows-related blog, wrote in a recent post.

Microsoft was scheduled to release the XP SP3 download on April 29, but a
"compatibility issue" delayed it until May 7. Mention of the reboot problem
first popped up on the Microsoft forums on April 23, prompting some to
speculate that the poster's problem was due to an outdated version of SP3,
but users who installed the final version soon reported the same issue.

"At this point, I want to clarify that the endless rebooting is not at all
related to SP3 per se," Johansson wrote. "The problem is that with some
configurations, SP3 causes the computer to crash during boot, and Windows XP,
by default, is set up to automatically reboot when it crashes. That is why
you end up in the endless rebooting scenario."

OK, so it's not SP3, but it IS SP3. Brilliant.

Apparently what is going on ACTUALLY is that the same old lack of
ACTUAL 'Plug and Play' on PCs has reared its Gorgonesque head
again and turned a variety of PCs into stone, or rather into
useless puke machines. And YES, this is Microsoft's fault, and
YES, this is XP SP3's fault because Microsoft did not account for
all the frickin' nasty non-standard (because there is NO
STANDARD) PC hardware setups. Great.

Geez. You could have bought a Mac.
