I have a Powermac G5, the early 1.8Ghz single processor version and an Intel powered Mini, as well as one of the early iPods.

Almost no problems with any of them, nor with the other much older macs I have had over the years.

The only problem I have had that is irritating is Leopard and my G5 Powermac. It seems that some people, me included, are having issues with the two together. But then it is a 4 year old machine and an early design. Expecting Leopard to not have an issue or two with it would be like asking Vista to not have problems with 4+ year old wintel boxes.
But isn't that the whole idea behind the "whole widget", that since they speced' out all the parts, it should "just work", right?

Since they built the whole widget that worked just fine, and still does with the original software and OS, and even some later versions of the OS, it did work right.

But now it is 4+ years later and a new OS is out there that SOME Powermac G5's are having problems with.
Did you get that G5 single 1.8GHZ before it was released? I mean, considering it wasn't released until mid October 2004, would make it 3 1/2 years old.

Hmm... I bought it as a refurb in 2004 and had a 3-yr Applecare on it also. That expired in Sept I think. Seems odd...

Introduced in June 2003. It has a 900Mhz FSB vice the 600Mhz FSB that the later single had, and came with a 160Gbyte SATA HD standard. It also has 8 RAM slots.

Ahh, sorry, didn't realize they had a 1.8GHZ single back then. I thought up until then, it was all duals. My mistake.



Now the Powermac G5 is still working, so is the OS up to Tiger. So I suppose it could be compared to hooking up a newly designed tranny to your 4 year old car and expecting that to work with no problems.
ummm... No. Car analogies never fit right.

Or you could look at it this way. Apple designed my PM G5 'widget' with an OS included as part of that widget. That widget is still working fine with no problems at all. Now I add something that wasn't made specifically for that particular 'widget' and a small percentage of us are having issues.
The list price on that G5 was $1500.
Now, lets just say for comparison, I bought a $1500 computer back in 2004....

You say that, but have you or anyone you know tried it?
I ran it for about a month on my Inspiron laptop with a core duo 2.0GHZ, 1 gig of ram, and a 7900GS video card. It ran quite well for most tasks, including games. But when it came to the OpenGL Cad/Cam apps I need for work, it completely falls on it's face. I had to switch back to XP.

The major complaint that I've heard from friends is that Vista just isn't very friendly to machines more than those produced about a year before Vista released.
MOST of those complaints are because of a lack of ram, and video. Vista, with aero takes a ton of graphical resources.

When I get my copy of Vista(should be in a few weeks, I get a copy of Vista ultimate for free), I'll throw it on a Dell of similar vintage, with a 3.2GHZ P4, and 2 gig of ram, and a 7900GT video card, and try it for myself, before I install it on my media center Athlon 64.
Do that and report back here about it. I'm curious.

I certainly will. I am curious myself. By what I've seen, most of the problems with Vista have been sluggish graphics performance, especially with the aero interface.
