Apple ensures through better testing and design, that not just any parts go in their machines, only the ones that work best together. Pretty much explains why Apple's boxes have fewer problems and possibly is the reason for the longer average life and resale value.
I guess you didn't buy one of the first Mac Pros with the ATI x1900xt cards in them.

And never left your Apple engineered iPod connected to it when you restarted (it hangs the system).

Their quality sadly doesn't seem to be as good these days...

Steve
I have a Powermac G5, the early 1.8Ghz single processor version and an Intel powered Mini, as well as one of the early iPods.

Almost no problems with any of them, nor with the other much older macs I have had over the years.

The only problem I have had that is irritating is Leopard and my G5 Powermac. It seems that some people, me included, are having issues with the two together. But then it is a 4 year old machine and an early design. Expecting Leopard to not have an issue or two with it would be like asking Vista to not have problems with 4+ year old wintel boxes.
But isn't that the whole idea behind the "whole widget", that since they speced' out all the parts, it should "just work", right?

Nice try!

Since they built the whole widget that worked just fine, and still does with the original software and OS, and even some later versions of the OS, it did work right.

But now it is 4+ years later and a new OS is out there that SOME Powermac G5's are having problems with.

Did you get that G5 single 1.8GHZ before it was released? I mean, considering it wasn't released until mid October 2004, would make it 3 1/2 years old.

Now the Powermac G5 is still working, so is the OS up to Tiger. So I suppose it could be compared to hooking up a newly designed tranny to your 4 year old car and expecting that to work with no problems.

ummm... No. Car analogies never fit right.

Or you could look at it this way. Apple designed my PM G5 'widget' with an OS included as part of that widget. That widget is still working fine with no problems at all. Now I add something that wasn't made specifically for that particular 'widget' and a small percentage of us are having issues.

The list price on that G5 was $1500.
Now, lets just say for comparison, I bought a $1500 computer back in 2004....

Lets look at some prices.... I've used www.gotapex.com to help me get really good deals at Dell. So lets look near the date of the release of the single G5 1.8 powermac. 4th quarter of 2004

On October 24th 2004 I could have gotten a Dell 8400 with a P4 3.0GHZ, 1 gig of ram, 160gb SATA HD, ATI Radeon X800SE PCI-E with 19" LCD monitor. for about $1050 with discounts.

With a simple $190(I've seen them just last week at $165 however) GeForce 8800GT graphics card.

Upgrade ram to 4 gig for $70

that same Dell 8400 would run Vista just fine.
