The answer to my question is that Dave doesn't know about it because there's
nothing like that in OSX to know about, and you were wrong or lying when you
claimed OS X has a counterpart to the Windows Set Program Access and
Computer Defaults.

OSX has something "like that", which is what you asked for.

No, it has nothing like that. It has no system control panel to choose the
default browser. You've already been corrected on this by Snit.

And since it was me who corrected him he will not, I expect, admit I am
right. His excuses shall be, I am betting, amusing.

No doubt! :-D

They've
just moved the exact same functionality to something you rather not
have be synonymous to "control panel" even though it is a "panel", it
control things and it is a system setting.

No, browser preferences are not a system control panel. Even IE on
Windows has a place in its preferences to make itself the default browser.

You are correct that OSX does not provide this functionality within
System Preferences,

Am I? I merely asked if it did. You falsely claimed it did, and Snit
corrected you that it does not.

but if it did, it wouldn't be in a control panel
anyway, it would be in a "preference pane",

This is semantics.

which is a view within one
application, not a separate control panel as in classic MacOS or in
Windows.

Wikipedia says the preference pane is like the control panel in system 6.

It is very much the same (though the implementation is somewhat different)

That's what happens when your last resort is to take things literally

That was your first and last resort. It didn't work out well for you.

when you realize that a functionality "like that" is present in OSX.

No it's not. It's in Safari, not in a control panel, as you were asked
for.

Well, any browser that launches can ask to be the default... so the feature
is there in OS X, just not accessible in the place where, frankly, it would
make sense to access it.

Right. When I say it's not in OSX, I mean the control panel Dave wanted, not simply the ability to make a browser the default if it asks for it. Sandman should have taken the time to understand the conversation before he jumped in to muddle it.
