So, can't say I've tried sharing with Windows computers a lot, but
this seems like either a cache problem or a Leopard problem.
I turned on windows sharing on my Macbook Pro, and went to the network
view on my Windows Vista Ultimate computer. It searched for a while
and then showed my laptop. I double-clicked it and provided the login
(which was my name, not my login name by the way).
After that I see two items: "sandman's public folder" and "Printers".
Oh, ok.. so when logged in I don't have the same kind of access as
when I log in via AFP, where I can mount the entire hard drive? Well,
that's ok, I thought. Leopard has new sharing abilities!
So I went to the folder I was interested in, "Get Info", check "Shared
Folder". The folder in question get the "Shared Folder" banner in the
window so the sharing seems to be adequately performed. In the Sharing
preference pane in System Preferences, the folder is list alongside
the "Sandman's Public Folder".
In Vista, I right click in the window and pick refresh. It blanks the
window and refreshes it but shows the same two items. Hm.
On the Mac, I turn file sharing off, and my computer is removed from
the network view in Vista, I then turn it on and it is again shown,
but when mounting/entering it, the same two items are shown, but not
the folder I shared. How come?
I reboot Vista to no avail, the folder just doesn't show up. Anyone
knows what might cause this problem?
Check under the Options... button in the Sharing panel of System
Preferences. You have to indicate which accounts can access SMB (i.e.
Windows) shares. You probably get your public folder automatically, but
for other folders, it may be necessary to specify your account can
access them via SMB.
