If users would buy something other than Photoshop to get 64-bit
support, would not they just as easily get Windows instead, and 64-bit
Photoshop for Windows?

Because they want to stick with OS X... they prefer it: it serves them
better overall. I know that is the case with me. Even with Photoshop I
prefer the Apple color selector and other benefits of the Mac platform.

No doubt. But users who feel that way can just use 32-bit Photoshop. It's
the users who *would* switch that Adobe needs to worry about it. That and
new users.

Suppose Adobe had announced that CS4 would be 64-bit on Windows, 32-bit on
the Mac, and that this state of affairs would continue until Apple got
proper 64-bit support. How would that hurt them? Wouldn't that put a lot of
pressure on Apple to make with the 64-bit Carbon?

It would be interesting to visit that alternate universe.

They are certainly being very supportive of Apple. I can't see what Apple
has done to deserve it.

Given them a platform to sell their software (and, I am sure, offered
technical and other forms of support).

That seems pretty small beer to me. It's not like Apple selling Macs is some
great favor to Adobe!

Now, it's not all bad news for WinTrolls. Windows Photoshop is going
64-bit
in the next release, but Mac users will have to wait until the one after
that. Whenever that is.

And that is a bit of a bummer for OS X users - though I can understand
why.

Indeed.

This shows how Windows is doing better at its 64-bit transition: it's got
a
complete set of 64-bit APIs, which will enable Adobe to make this
transition
without a rewrite. Apple hasn't gotten this far; they've got a 32-bit OS
with limited 64-bit extensions, and will hold Mac users back.

Nope: it shows Apple's decision to not bring Carbon up to 64 bit will have
some relatively short term detrimental effects...

I think the "relatively short term" will be years long. We don't know when
Photoshop CS5 will come out, but since CS4 isn't here yet, I think it'll be
a couple of years yet.

Remember that even though CS4 isn't out yet, Adobe has effectively made a
statement that Windows Photoshop will be the 'serious' version: the version
for the Big Jobs.

Anyway, this is still illustrative of how Apple is behind.

No, it is illustrative of how PS on Mac will be behind in one way for one
version of the software.

And this is going to get more important; already we are starting to see
64-bit Windows on the high-end consumer boxes, right off the shelf-
something I hadn't expected to see so soon.

It'll be some time yet before the low end goes 64-bit, but Apple does not
compete there anyway.

effects I wish were not
there but so be it. As it is, right now I am running some 64 bit
software -
no special version of OS X is needed.

Sure you need a special version: Leopard, right? Isn't Leopard special? :D

However, I am curious: what 64-bit software are you using? Chess.app?

According to Activity Monitor httpd is 64 bit - not that for my usage it
really matters.
