Because according to Adobe, Adobe reader is only 32bit.
They don't support or provide a 64-bit version.
You have to use a 32-bit browser to use their pdf reader.

I just installed Windows Vista SP1 x64 from scratch.

I pulled up Internet Explorer, went to Adobe's web site, and clicked on the "Get Adobe Reader" icon.

It identified my system automatically as "Windows Vista, English".

I click on "Download Now" and it downloads [8.1.2] and installs.

I pull up IE again and search for a PDF file, which IE loads up with Adobe, no issue.

I also did not see anywhere in this process, even under "System Requirements", that Vista x64 was not supported. Searching their web site I see numerous references that people should download Adobe Reader 8.1 if thehy need 64-bit support, as that versions supports 64-bit.

Ok, so they finally got Adobe Reader for Vista64. But when one is using OS X that fact isn't known. When you search on Vista64, you get this:
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/search/index.cfm?loc=en_us&term=vista64
Which says that one is being developed. Guess it is now finished. :D
