but you still are denying that there is a licensing issue
when there is and it's with M$ licensing fees.
no jim, i'm not denying any such thing. i'm saying the client
licensing issues go away when you replace the backend (server)
software, since you're paying to connect to the servers. it doesn't
matter what the front end is.
you understand this part yet jim?
apparently not- see below where i talk about you STILL not getting it.
You're presuming they
want to spend the bucks to rewrite in Java, which might be just as
expensive for them. You're also presuming Java is THE way. No
eveyone
shares your opinion.
uh, dude, did you read the article?- that's a big part of what they
ARE doing.
And THEY are doing it and with THEIR assessment, the savings are
huge(outside of plain hardware which was only $355,550.
the point jim, is the savings on the licenses to connect to a server
come REGARDLESS of what's on the front end when they swap out the back
end w/ none MS solutions, because that's the way MS licensing works.
and there's nothing in the article that says the $355k is only
hardware- it says the "total cost" of switching; if you think 'total
cost of switching' only includes hardware, it kind of makes me wonder
how much you leared when you "followed the TCO/ROI thing for many
years..." :P
You're forgetting that they haven't switched from the SQL servers they
have since they work and are not at the end of their life cycle.
no jim, i did not forget that.
Second
they put in 28 Macs (which run their VIPS application) and they more
than likely put in mid-level iMacs-- 20" @$1499 and they put in 28 per
the article, that's $41,972 not a huge amount leaving $313,578 for other
needs such as the 40 non-SQL xServes which at $2999 are $119,960
including all licensing for a total of $41,962 + $119,960 = $ 161,932
leaving $355550 - $ 161,932 = $193,618 for other needs like the
consultants for one along with other peripherals etc.
they've put in 28 macs at the *tacoma* facility. they have 27 more
facilities to go apparently.
Considering that they have side-stepped a huge licensing fee for Windows
the numbers aren't a stretch so far, only in your world and apparently
not in theirs and this is without re-writing things either.
you STILL don't get it jim- it's not windows that have huge licensing
fees- it's the client access licenses to access the servers. since
they're changing out the backend, they 'side step' those fees anyways,
regardless of the hardware on the client machines.
You're splitting hairs as windows usual. No one said it was solely the
server, even the article mentions ALL the licenses needed and THAT IS
the problem. For OS X that cost for clients is $ 0 and that wins here.
<snip>
The problem appears to to be yours ed and not theirs and the problems
are not do to technology, hardware or costs but due to folks like you
who would trumpet the Microsoft Hegeonomy.
no jim, the problem is you have no idea what's going on. :D
Yeah, I'm not a Windows nut...
All you've done here is show how you're in the naysayer camp at AWC,
resistant to any change that is not M$.
no jim.
