A friend of mine took me to a Mac store the other day. I was blown
away and impressed by everything I saw.

I know the feeling, although "everything" is probably going too
far. :)

I've been using GNU/Linux for the past 8 years, the last 1 - 2 I've been
using Ubuntu.

No wonder you're looking for something better. Just this week I
had to put the latest ubuntu on a recent PC. It was ugly. It
was flaky, it was in short far from baked. After getting
everything installed, downloading all the updates and getting
down to business. It seized up the X server under incredibly
light usage. It's still not ready for prime time. Linux
distros seem to be getting worse over time, instead of better.
Linux was a lot more stable a decade ago than it is today.
Somewhere they lost the handle.

I would be interested in hearing the thoughts of anyone who was a
regular Linux user who migrated to the Mac.

I was a UNIX user on a lot of SVR3, SVR4 and BSD systems way
back when, later Solaris, then Linux. I've run RedHat, SuSE,
Caldera, debian, mandrake, and a host of others. I've always
preferred UNIX systems on my own computers, although my "day
job" for a lot of years was on Windows and OS/2 systems.

I used OS X for the first time (wasn't even aware of it being a
factor at all in the UNIX game at the time) around 10.3. I was
loaned a G4 tower by a coworker to try porting some software
over.

After a couple days using it and realizing what it was, namely a
UNIX done incredibly right, with no duct tape in sight, I knew I
wanted one of my own. A couple weeks later my shiny new
Powermac G5 arrived, and I'm still typing on it right now. I
also own two Intel-based Macs now.
