smaller, crappier hotels are actually more likely to have wi-fi (and
advertise it on signs. :P )  - higher end hotels wired their
properties years ago- but they often have both wireless and wired.

The really low end hotels' WiFi is usually pretty lousy connection
too. However, I think the sweet spot are places like Courtyard
(Marriot) and Hampton Inn (Hilton) - its usually wireless and free.
Interestingly, move up to the top-of-the-line hotels in these same
chains and the connection now has a fee again. IMO, it has to do with
VP's having more liberal rules for what they can charge to their
expense account :-)

but wired is obviously more reliable and faster, so i plug in when i
have a choice.  ;D

Its also a bit more secure, too.

just got back from hawaii where i stayed at the royal hawaiin- wired, but
no
wireless.

Just up the street from where I stayed two years ago (Moana
Surfrider).

Wonder how many of these hotels will get USB Ethernet adaptors to rent.

At the Hampton Inn that I've spent many nights at, they had free
loaners at the desk, although I don't think it was of USB-->
Ethernet. I think they had just Cat5 cables and USB--> Wireless
adaptors.

That makes sense too... even better, really.

In general, if one is really expecting that you're going to
have to plug in to be connected (or prefer same), then you're going to
carry your own cable in case the front desk's out of loaners, and if
you're doing that and need a USB dongle, you'll have that along too.

If this is real common, though, then the lack of Ethernet is a weakness...

Only if you don't have the $29 Apple is charging for a USB Ethernet
adaptor.
