Re: volume
How else can you talk about size usefully, where shape is different?
There are these things called height, width and depth that
convey much more useful information in general. They also yield
approximate value for the volume, accuracy depending upon how
uniform the shape is.
Re: difference between 11 and 13 mm
You're right, not significant in where it will fit.
Unless of course you have some container that is 12mm and you
need to store it there. Dimensions really matter a great deal
to some people, and not to others. Knowing what they are before
you buy is not a big deal.
Re: Apple's thinness issues
This is a design choice, as you suggested.
Not something about function; just a design choice. It doesn'tmean
sacrificing a feature or behavior.
Actually it does. To get this "thinness" you sacrifice quite a
few features from say a Macbook Pro or even a Macbook. Not
every product needs to be identically featured, otherwise why
have more than one model at all? You either like it, or you do
not and make your purchase decisions appropriately.
It's somewhat funny when people claim a new product is "***"
simply because it isn't the exact product they are looking for.
It's likely going to be well-received by some others, or it
won't be around long on the market.
And even more, it's a proven major factor for buyers. Witness the
Motorola line -- after years of working a phone line based on 'flip'
models, they found that 'thin' was a much bigger design factor.
Strange, almost every motorola phone I see these days is a Razr,
and it's a flip phone.
