Superdrive firmware update 2.1 (archive)
- From: Steve Carroll <trollkiller@xxxxxx>

Anyone familiar with Apple's antics on ignoring problems and making
threads from their support forum disappear knows why I'm archiving these
2 threads here. I tried the simpleflash fix that's been circulating and
it worked... sort of... of the testing I've done thus far it rejected
one media brand but took another (typical even for a working drive).
After the CD data burn completed the same drive would not display the
data it had just burned, the disk looked empty. I yanked it out and
reinserted... rebooted... it just sees the disk as empty. Oddly... the
data did show up when I moved the CD to my G5 tower. Weird... but I'm
better off than I was (unable to burn CD's at all). The Apple tech
(genius) I spoke to was at the Aspen Grove Apple store.. I went there
yesterday. While waiting for the genius I spoke with a guy (William) who
hopes to soon be an Apple genius... but he was working the floor for the
time being. William said he administers computers at Metro (local
college in Denver). I told him that I recently gave my son my graphics
card out of my G5 Dual and was looking for a replacement. I mentioned
the ATI 800 XT as a candidate and asked what he'd recommend. I said that
a replacement needed to be a PCI-X card... he said that meant it was PCI
express architecture... I said no, they are different and not
compatible. William then went and checked on the net and found out what
I'd told him was true. We talked a bit more and I got called to the
Genius Bar... he thanked me for the info. The Apple Genius tried burning
to a DVD... to no avail... (haven't tried a DVD myself yet after the
simpleflash update). He tried a few brands of CD... nothing. He said I'd
need to replace the drive (around $500). This same genius that told me
that my battery was available for the replacement program. My wife was
with me... I leaned over and quietly told her he was wrong about that...
she said "he's the Apple genius" and I was probably wrong about the
serial number... so I let him be a genius. He bookmarked the battery
recall page and said he couldn't replace the battery but I should just
follow the steps on the page. I let my wife punch the numbers into the
page when we got home... suffice it to say that of the words she used to
describe the "Apple genius" after attempting this, the word "genius"
wasn't among them. Not a great day for Apple support.
Here's that superdrive info archive...

Thousands of loyal APPLE customers have been burned by this firmware
update. We now have verying levels of Superdrive performance, or lack
thereof.
Is there anyway to repair the firmware or replace with the original
version of the firmware?

It is weird that the prior thread on this topic has been locked without
any resolution.
This is STILL a problem, and Apple hasn't come up with an official
response.
My SuperDrive has been totally dead ever since the SuperDrive Firmware
Update 2.1 was installed. I am two months out of warranty - but this is
very clearly a known issue caused by a faulty update from Apple.
I took my MBP into the Apple Store a few days ago, and the Genius told
me that he "expected that Apple would ultimately handle it" - but for
now there was nothing he could do.
I wonder how long I am supposed to go without my drive working?
Apple - are you listening?

I've tried contacting AppleCare. I just spent nearly an hour on and off
hold with them, eventually reaching a "Senior Product Specialist"...
He is now escalating the problem up to engineering, and I can expect to
hear back from him in about five business days. Egads.
Apple needs to figure out some sort of standard and official response to
this issue.

I'm working in applecare and I heard about that problem. I have myself a
problem in one of the recent topic that I can't fix tonight i think.
If you were on hold all the time that's mean that it wasn't a good
agent, because it's kind of problem you have to give short answers. I
can't explain why this update screw computers up but as far as I know
there is no official responses.
If you manage to get a "senior" they will maybe give you an exception as
long as you have some rights as customers even after your warranty ran
out.

I could burn 20 dvds of a wedding and 10 of another. The dvds are

burn at all.
my software updates are all in order. Do I need to blame the dvd burner
or the image? I need reliability.. can't sell defective dvds.

I am not sure that continuous burning will work on a MBP. Burning DVDs
is a rather temperature sensitive thing and you may be overheating the
drive and/or the disks themselves.
I have some "flaky" DVDs that will play in a cold DVD player, but when
the player and disk warm up, I get errors, and this was a kind-of
commercial disk. I copied the disk and now it plays fine.
My point is that temperature might be your problem. Try another machine
or see what happens after shutting it down for an hour and then starting
again.

The MacBook Pro is an amazing machine, at least the guts of it are. I
think Apple needs to test things out a lot more before they jump on
releasing it. This will be the last time I buy something first
generation from Apple. I spent $3000 on this machine. The case is warped
from the heat. The machine gets way too hot for my liking and now my
superdrive doesn't work. The lid has never closed properly. Always a
gap. Apple are amazing at sales and marketing but I must say their
customer care and service *****. Their website support is a joke really.
Great that we can talk to other customers, compare problems etc.... But
where's Apple in all this? Where's an email link for advice on what to
do or troubleshooting...Specially with 'KNOWN' problems. I really don't
have time to sit on the phone trying to get through nor can be without
my computer. It's a big part of my income. Apple Care .... Underwear....
This machine has design faults. I don't need a 'Genius' to tell me that.
All we need is a simple procedure identifying the drive fault and then a
very simple procedure in fixing it. All layed out as a 'recall' or
Protocol on this website, in plain English for everyone to see. Spending
hours on this site, trying to find out why my drive doesn't work has
been a complete waste of my time. All along Apple has known about the
firmware update frying drives... Thanks guys!

Sadly, as companies get big they tend to ignore their base. "The
customer is always right" is only applicable for start-ups and small
businesses.
Apple is now working with MS?
And most, if not all Apple products are made in China. 'Nuff said about
that.

I had the same problem. I went to an Apple Store here in the Philippines
and they told me to call Apple Care since my MacBook Pro is out of
warranty. They granted me an exceptional warranty/customer satisfaction
exception and they replaced my Matshita UJ-857 with a brandnew one. My
previous Superdrive's revision was changed to HAEA and now it's back to
HAE4.
Thank you Apple.:)

I'd like to be added to those complaining. I am not sure if it was the
superdrive update that caused my problem, but reading this thread leads
me to believe so.
Problem is this: My Superdrive will now read only commercial DVDs, some
back up MP3 disks, but no DVD back-up AVI files. The DVDs containing AVI
and Video_ts files go in, spin for awhile, and just get spit back out.
So, what's the deal? Is the drive fried or are we supposed to wait for a
fix-it update - as someone who is dependent on his machine 24/7, I can't
just send it in for a 2 - 6 week repair job. Any ideas out there?

Thanks Apple! Apple won't help me out. Apparently my drive isn't one of
those being granted exceptional warranty, yet the synopsis of the
problem is EXACTLY the same as what everyone else is saying on here.
C'mon...I know this is bs. So now I face paying $500 for a replacement
superdrive. Never again will I buy a first generation product from
Apple. This is not just down to the Superdrive. Every MacBookPro that I
have seen has warped cases. Look at the way the lid shuts and the gaps
on either side. This is normal according to Apple. Yet, read all the
discussions regarding warped cases due to excessive heat. When you've
paid $3500 for a product you expect quality and good customer service.
This machine isn't in terms of it's design. It's flawed and was from the
start. It was released pre-maturely and I've learned a good lesson here.
DO NOT BUY FIRST GENERATION PRODUCTS FROM APPLE. They rush things and
make mistakes all the time, so Steve Yobb's can stand up there
scratching his ego.
I wonder what will go next? Screen? Hard Drive? So I will get this fixed
as soon as and sell it. It was a lemon from the start.
So beware new buyers! A big warning.
Sorry for the moan, but I'm really, really disappointed with Apple.

Hi Nick and Everyone,
I've had the exact same problem -- 2.1 killed my superdrive. It wouldn't
accept any disks at all, completely dead. After about 3 months of
frustrated googling to find a fix I finally ran across something that
worked for me. A fellow by the name of Ben11 posted a utility called
'simpleflash' that may help fix your problem. I ran it and my drive came
back up, so far I've had no problems. Keep in mind the usual 'voiding
your warranty' stuff -- if your drive is still under warranty or you
have the Apple Care program I'd go that route. But if you're like me and
don't have the plan and are out of warranty it might be worth a shot. It
definitely saved me some money Also keep in mind I just installed this
fix and I haven't fully tested everything (but it accepts disks now, I
was able to bring up the dvd player, and I just burned a dvd). Here's
the link to the post I found:

I have been wondering why I can't play music CDs and put them into
iTunes. The CD spins fine, I download the first few tracks OK and then
it just sort of hangs with the CD spinning and nothing else happening.
So I leave it a while, try and eject it, but can't. So I have to do a
restart. The next time I insert the same CD the same happens. I've given
up at the moment and wonder if I should ask for a replacement drive
before the warranty runs out? Or give up ripping CDs into iTunes? Or
wait for Apple to fix it?

And of course, my warrantee ran out just before the update. Been in

however they'll will do their best to help. They've also suggested
getting in touch with AppleCare (can't even find a phone number or

Anybody got a phone number or email?
Most unimpressed.

Just been in touch with AppleCare (they weren't going to talk to me due

To cut a long story short, the representative got in touch with the Tech

result, my local Apple Store will replace the drive free of charge!!!
So, call them!!!!

well maybe other good news is that i figured out i can get around the
problem by quitting the application i want to burn a cdr with and have
the macbook accept the cdr with another application...
didn't find a system in it, but it works most of the time...
so open iphoto, imovie, itunes, finder,... and try to burn a cdr to let
the macbook accept the cdr and not eject it, and then open the
application you really want to use and burn!

I called UK applecare today. I am out of warranty by 3 months. I was
told that although they are aware of this 2.1 firmware problem, The
update merely brought forward a fault which would have happened anyway.
This sounds at best like a load of nonsense which is completely
impossible to prove.
The quote to repair from an apple authorised dealer. £479. I am not
happy. The drive alone is £280.
Do I keep on at them?

My broken Superdrive reads some DVDs and not others. It reads the Tiger
install disc, but not Leopard.
OK Apple, what do you want me to do? Select 1:
1. Return the Leopard Install disc.
2. Return the PBPro.
3. Return both.
4. Have you fix it within 2 hours, and without taking my computer for 3
days.
5. Do none of the above and have me badmouth Apple for the first time
since 1989.
Your thoughts.

I also have a terrible issue with my Superdrive UJ-857. After firmware
2.1 it just blows. It won't read any Leopard discs! I called Apple
support and they gave me the runaround with PRAM clearing etc. I know
the problem is the firmware but the idiot lady wouldn't listen to me on
if there was a rollback option available. I am a tech worker and
understand what is going on, but no software to fix it. Apple you are
killing me when I was your #1 fan.

Well, I've been having the same problem as everyone here, so I drove
down to the Bret Cross Apple Store in London for what turned out to be a
total waste of time and fuel.
I phoned in the morning to check they'd booked my appointment as I don't
trust them after the last time I tried it (when the call centre in India
failed to book it correctly). They had got it right this time, so I
explained my problem and asked if that's something they could fix in the
store. They said yes if we have the part in stock, but if not we can
order it for you and you can come back for a while-you-wait repair if
you don't want to leave your Mac with us.
They were of course running late when I got there, but I eventually
explained my problem to the so called "Genius". He sneered and scoffed
when I mentioned the discussion group on the Apple site. I was merely
pointing out that others had had the same problem, but he insisted that
he'd never seen or heard of anybody with the same problem. After testing
my drive he eventually verified that there was a problem and proceeded
to book my MBP in for repair. I explained I couldn't leave it with them
because I needed it for work, and asked if they could fix in store. "No
no, we don't do that kind of repair here! It'll have to go back to Apple
for 7-10 days!"
So I had made the trip just for the Genius (he was the head genius by
the way) to do exactly what I'd already done. Useless. Now I feel I have
no choice but to buy a new Superdrive for £67 from thebookyard.com and
fit it myself - despite the fact that my MBP is under warranty - because
I can't be without my computer.
Not too impressed with Apple at the moment.

I know 5 people, including myself, with Mac Book Pros that all lost the
ability of burning CD/DVD just after the infamous update. One guy that
works for a local Apple repair center hasn't been able to get his fixed
yet. At this point he says the drive has to be replaced. Is Apple ever
going to acknowledge this problem and maybe fix it? Like everyone else
(meaning 1000s of Mac Book Pro customers) I'm left with nearly a $4K
computer that can't burn a simple CD. When is this problem going to be
taken care of??? Can't a new update be written to undo what has been
done???

STRANGELY enough, I installed the Superdrive update a while ago, and
everytime I turn on the computer, a warning box would come up saying
some like "Superdrive update is useless, no such hardware". I left it
like that for month, simply clicking "close" whenever this would pop up
and I never had any problems. A few weeks ago, tired of this, I opened
the "Utility" folder, I located the software and deleted it. So now the
warning message stopped popping up... a few days have passed and then
since yesterday, I tried to burn a DVD and the process failed. Tried to
watch DVDs I had burned : doesn't read it like some of you reported.
Although actual pre-recorded DVDs work just fine.
After ******* with it for a while, I sometimes manage to make the drive
read a burned DVD, by simply persisting and pushing the disk back
whenever the drive throws it out, but it's really a hassle. So I'll be
calling my retail store in a few minutes... !

What a piece of Crap, My drive has been failing me for a few months, now
I know why. And yes I do remember having this update, and it being run
by the software updater. What really enrages me about this situation is
that it has been going on for months and Apple has done NOTHING!
Not a word, and the suggested solution? Have a new drive installed! What
a waste, I t seems to me that some type of software fix, or some kid of
"flash" or restore package, would be cheaper and easier than to have a
new drive installed! And what a waste of parts and materials, for a
company that is supposed to be environmentally friendly, writing a piece
of code must certainly be better than the crates of trashed drives this
must have generated.
Apple get with the program, this problem has planted the first seeds of
doubt, and I am a 20 year customer!

Hey guys, i've been here since July 07 with the same problem as all of
you.
But now, i just tried about 5 mins ago, that simpleflash.zip file that
ben11 wrote.
I only tried it cos i got tired of Apple sitting back and doing nothing.
And it worked, i couldn't believe to hear that weird drive sound when it
turns on.
So really go download it, the link is:
http://rapidshare.com/files/57312123/SimpleFlash.zip.html
and there is also a discussion section on the Apple site.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6178853
Really it does work, and it takes less than 4 minutes.
All credit to ben11, you legend!

Hi, I had a similar problem on my MBP a few days ago ; superdrive could
read dvd's but cd's only randomly ; here is what solved the problem
although I am unable to confirm both problems were linked ;
The bin contained many files including two movies (approx 700Mo each) .
I had trouble emptying the bin & kept getting an error message : the
file you are trying to delete is being used - unable to delete. So I
closed Finder and re-opened it, then I was able to empty the bin. I
don't know how both features can be linked but the superdrive is now
fully operational. I hope this can be of help for other users

Luckly, I was able to complete the update and use the drive

update" everytime I start up the mbp. How will one get rid of it? - It's

Hi!
I'm from Spain and I've had this problem for two weeks. I've called the
Mac Support Phone and they only could ask me to check out all the
preferences of my macbook Pro. This preferences are locatted in the
Library. Well, I've checked out all of them and the problem is the one
called: loginwindow.plist. I've openned the file and the fact is that
this preference wants the application called SuperDrive Updated 2.1 to
start when the Mac is started. Solution: Delete the loginwindow.plist.
If you don't like the idea you can cut and paste this preference on the
desktop and check out if the Mac is Ok when restarted.
I hope you find usefull this information.

Just a followup to my earlier post:
I actually had 7 days left in my warranty, so Apple Support assisted me
with this issue. Interestingly, they decided to replace the laptop --
rather than repair it.
I asked if they were taking this approach so they could do more thorough
diagnostics, and he said yes. Perhaps their investigation will
ultimately lead to a fix for everybody else. My fingers are crossed for
you guys.

You should see it listed there. Select it and his the "minus" sign at

Curious.
If your system worked perfectly fine before, why would you want to update
it? What are you expecting the unit to do after an update, which you
wasn't able to do before? Are you expecting it to grow wings, allowing
you to burn, rip, read faster?

I don't think everyone needs the update cause it'll generally fix
something which affects you, as a user. Such as problems accessing DL
DVD's, compatibility with a certain brand, speed or something else, then
yeah by means do try the update.
But if your not experiencing any such problems, then there's absolutely
no point upgrading, as for every update there is a slim chance something
can go wrong; esp firmware updates. Sure Apple can replace the Unit, but
you'll be without your system for xx days/weeks. Get my drift?

....."Curious.
If your system worked perfectly fine before, why would you want to update
it? What are you expecting the unit to do after an update, which you
wasn't able to do before? Are you expecting it to grow wings, allowing
you to burn, rip, read faster?"
More times than not, system updates improve the functionality,
reliability or security of your Mac. There are two distinct opinions
here. Some owners' would rather wait until there is clear evidence of no
problems and those who simply want the latest updates when theyre
published. Its really not fair to criticize those who opt for the
latter. There are a few self-proclaimed gods on this form who actually
get offended when some members post a response that they dont agree with.

UltraNeo... What exactly do you expect to accomplish with a post like
that? There is no place for that junk in the support forums.
1) The update states that it adds support for more media types.
2) It is available for all users, with no warnings.
I for one, would want my MBP to work with as many media types as
possible. I end up burning items for people on the road, and a lot of
times they just hand me a CD and ask me to put items on their CD. The
last thing I want is to say I can't accomplish this task until I go find
a hotspot, download a firmware update, then get back to them. If there
is something I could do now to avoid that, I would, and I did.
That being said, my drive now has a problem with burning DVD-R media, or
at least what I have on hand. Yesterday I was able to make a data DVD
out of iTunes, and today after the update, I can't burn to the same
DVD-R media.
However, the issue is with a faulty firmware update, not the other users
choice to install the update. Your misguided aggression should be
focussed on apple releasing a faulty update, because the user has every
right to perform this update if it might help their situation. I for one
am looking for the "apple support forum firmware junk filter update", to
block out certain ridiculous comments.

Get an external DVD burner for $100 or so and use that. They are faster
anyway and are a good investment if all you have is the MacBook.

ok...so I just went to the mac store and replaced my drive, my mac is
under warranty so it was free...
they put a: HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080M in it....I have no idea what model
that is, and I'm assuming that's not the dual layer that they are
putting in the newer MacBook Pros is it??
And my other question for anybody who has this drive is sometimes it
burns quietly and sometimes a little louder? Is there any reason for
that??
Thanks!

No, it's not a virus... it's only this firmware... Many mac is working
fine, but many mac is killed the drive. If this firmware kill your
drive, change the drive. This firmware disable your DVD, and your DVD
now is never work agan. In your mac your DVD now is never talk to your

install fine your hardware not working..

I have the same problem with the update and I called apple support and
they told me to do a Archive and Install. I couldnt find my OS X disk so
they told me to call them back and they would walk me through since Ive
never done this before. Now before I call them back I have read that you
can just move the Superdrive Updater to the trash from the utilties
folder, is this safe? Then do you try and update again? Also how can I
tell if the update took the first time is there a version code or number
I can check.

Hi - i had the same problem (my drive would not accept any disk -
completely dead after the firmware update). Went to my local apple store
and they just replaced the complete superdrive under warranty. He said
that something must have gone wrong during update - and if that happens,
the drive is toast. Go see your local mac guys. If they are as great as
mine was they should hook you up with a new drive.
Thanks Apple - I am impressed!

OK, now I'm in a really bad mood.
Superdrive died after Superdrive Firmware update.
Tried to reinstall Mac OS X 10.4.10 v1.1, no use.
Tried to reinstall Mac OS X 10.4.10 update (combo) for Intel, which I
downloaded from this support site, and it CRASHED during the instalation
process, locking the computer at that infamous black screen. After that
it would not boot anymore, crashing at the white startup screen. This of
course made my computer completely unoperacional.
Since I have a Sony 820UL firewire external DVD+R DL drive, I tried to
restore the system, booting through the original Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Install Disc, but it would still crash at the startup.
After unpluging the external dvd drive from the Apple Cinema Display,
and plugin it directly to the MBP, I finaly got it to boot from the cd,
and restored my system 'sucessfully'.
Updated it again to 10.4.10.
Now it's 2am and my superdrive is still dead.
Moral to the story: Do nothing. Wait until Apple releases another
superdrive firmware update to fix this.

Fireware Restore CD is for logic board, therefore it might not work on
optical drives.
I agree with "Do nothing".
Apple probably has been awared of this issue, for software problems
making hardware to be replaced is not cost-efficient.

hallo,
i've got the same problem, but my drive can still read and burn cds and
some dvds. but all of my backup-dvds are dead!!
i talked to the apple support, and they sad that apple does not give any
warranty for updates...firmware or osx. AND MY LOCAL MAC-DEALER sad that
i should try the restore cd. but an other guy sad that firmware could
not be downgraded.

Looks like the 2.1 update worked for me, but I can no longer burn DVD+R.
I get a "Communciation with device" type error at a random point through
the burn. Reducing the burn rate seems to help it get a bit further, but
I haven't got more than 1/4 of the way through a disk.
I see on other messages that there are similar problems with DVD-R.
Apple, can we please have an installer for the previous firmware version

If the computer is under warranty, yes. Otherwise, expect to pay around

The Superdrive Update 2.1 killed my drive as well. The drive no longer
accepts any CDs or DVDs. It won't grab any discs.
Has anyone tried installing the Superdrive Update 2.0 to fix this
problem?

Hi,
here is another one. Less than 2 months old macbook pro 2.33 and
superdrive not available.
In the System Profiler it says there's no drive.
I think the hardware is ok: when a put in a cd or dvd the drive accepts
it but it doesn't recognize anything... and to eject I got to boot up
holding the disc with a credit card...
It seems that the Firmware update installation isn't finished or
something... I don't see anything in App/Utilities and in logs.
I'm a new mac user but this situation is surely not a "good trademark"
for apple. I hope there's a software solution or I'll got to ask a
change... with a great the lost of time...

Hi everyone,
my superdrive is dead too. I only realized it whrn I tried to put a cd
in: the disc spinned, but it didn't show on the desktop. I tried to
eject it, but it didn't work. Now I have a Superdrive with a cd stuck in
and the System profiler says I have no optical unit. Great!

I really don't know how, but yesterday the superdrive re-appeared in the
system profiler.
I haven't do anything, or better, after all my tries the drive resulted
still dead.
It seems there's been no updates from apple, at least visible by the
user....
Am I the only one?
P.S.: and it works!

Now...here's a question..is it possible I don't have a superdrive that
needs the update....Now my computer prompted me to update, however the
actual drive that is in my computer is a replacement drive that the Mac
store installed for my Macbook Pro which is actually a: MATSHITA DVD-R
UJ-857
And now my drive is not working correctly. Does that mean I screwed it
up by accepting this update and is there anyway to remove the update?
Thanks,

Mine too.
If I look at my update history, it seems to have been run twice.
But the bottom line is, the drive is as dead as a doorknob.
Wont even accept a disc.
Like most switchers' responses, I find it a bit dissapointing...
Especially since my MBP isnt even 13 months old yet (its like 12.5)

My drive didn't work before or after the update. It wouldn't read ANY
kind of media..CDs or DVDs. I brought it in to the Apple Store today to
get it checked out and they are taking it in for repair...probably
replacing the SuperDrive. Hopefully that will change things. My advice
is just to take it in, and see what they say...

I went to the, San Diego CA, Apple Store today. The guys at the Genius
Bar had no idea what I was talking about when I asked them about a fix
for the SuperDrive Firmware Update 2.1. They, multiple-geniuses, said
they hadn't heard about this problem. One guy recommended that I run the
Firmware Update again, and I told him that the Firmware Update looks at
my SuperDrive and tells me that I don't have any devices that need the
update.
The first genius said that I should put in a trouble report with apple's
support department, sugesting that they may not even be aware of this
problem, and he felt confident that Apple would issue a fix once they
realize a problem exists.
The reason I went into the store was to buy another 20" iMac, this time
for my son. We now have 4 macintoshes in our home, and we go way back to
the Apple ][+... Anyway, while I was waiting for the salesguy to bring
out my new iMac, I saw a woman bringing in her MacBookPro for a memory
upgrade and I told her to avoid installing the SuperDrive Firmware
Update 2.1 until Apple can resolve this issue. The genius behind the
counter seemed quite irritated when the woman asked him how she would
know if the Firmware Update has been run on her computer, because she
has always trusted Apple and installs all the updates without giving it
a second thought ( I'm the same way ). He told her that if her
SuperDrive was working fine then to not worry about it, and she
responded that she doesn't burn CDs frequently enough to know if her
drive has been disabled. Not another word was said.
I would just like to know that Apple is aware of the problem and is
interested in resolving it.

Sorry to dash your hopes pjcollings, but I'm pretty certain that the EFI
firmware update for the computer itself has little to do with the
SuperDrive, and even if it did, my guess is that a firmware restoration
*CD* might not be so useful when your disk drive refuses to even accept
a disk.

I am sure that the restore program is only for the EFI on the
motherboard and has nothing to do with the optical drive.
The firmware restore only works when a previous attempt to update the
EFI fails and the computer becomes an anchor.

I didn't disrupt the upgrade but I think the system rushed to reboot and
maybe didn't wait for the firmware update to complete.
I talked with Apple and the stupid guy on the phone didn't have any clue
about this. He made me do several pointless, stupid things to finally
realise that i am not a retard and told me to take my MBP to an apple
store.
A note to myself and others, do the system updates but when it comes to
Firmware updates wait a few days before doing the update and then do it,
just to be sure. I think Apple has made the 2.1 update unavailable so if
we have waited a few days we would have a working drive now...

Guys and girls... gather round and let me tell you a tale.
I've been having the same problem ever since that update. I also was
having a problem with my headphone jack being stuck on digital out. I
called Apple this morning and talked with them. They said that not
enough people are CALLING IN about the issue. I was on the phone for two
hours... but in the end, Apple wanted my old laptop as a test unit to
help fix yours! They don't have enough of these on hand that are
definitely affected with this issue... so they can't test fixes! It took
little prodding to get them to replace my machine with a BRAND NEW
2.4ghz Santa Rosa. I have the original middle of the line 2 ghz MBP with
the 256 mb VRAM and they put me with a 2.4 ghz Santa Rosa brand new.
They even let me take the old one to the store, transfer all my data,
and walk out with my new one because I run a business from this machine.
Believe it or not, Apple does care. I always tell me friends owning a
Mac is like driving a Porsche in a world of GM. And I thank Apple's
support team for working with me to keep me on the digital road. I say
call them up. You have nothing to lose but time and you may find some
amazing things if you just ask and are confident about your request.
As for me... I'll be enjoying my new Santa Rosa hopefully longer than my
2 ghz...
Best to you... there is no fix known other than repair\replacement.

Would it kill Apple to put up a notice saying that there are some issues
with the SuperDrive 2.1 update, that's it's been removed and a new
update is on its way?
As a new Mac user I'm disappointed that Apple would have such poor
quality assurance to release such an update, and that thereafter would
admit to nothing and keep their customers in the dark.
I just got off of the phone with techsupport, who claimed to have heard
nothing about any such issue. I honestly expected better.

Mine is dead also. 13 months after purchase. Apple issues an update to
the hardware, which then kills the hardware. Then they charge 4-$500 to
fix it? that sounds like something Microsoft would do.

Same problem here, drive died after the update. Australian Apple tech
said they had no knowledge of it, advised to visit an Apple Service

arrived four days later, installed it in two hours.

Same here. I tried to copy over some photos off a CD and halfway through
the transfer, the Superdrive was making some really weird noises, it
then wound down and stopped. The copying stopped and I couldn't eject
the CD. I had to restart it.
I brought it to my local Apple Store, the lady put in a CD and within
seconds said it needed a new Superdrive. I also told her about the noise
when the screen is dimmed, so the Inverter will be getting replaced as
well. I won't have it back in my hands for 5-9 business days! What am I
going to do until then? NOT GOOD!
It has been in the shop before for a couple different minor things... If
this stuff is happening to Apple products, could you just imagine what
Microsoft people have to live with?

I applied the update when it first came out, but didn't try to use any
optical media until today (7-17). My drive won't read either data DVD's
or movies. When I put them into the drive, there is some brief drive
noise, then within 45 seconds the disk is ejected with no error message
of any kind. Fixes or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated (although

As a follow up, I wanted to document that I went to the Apple Store near
West Hartford, CT. The genius stated that he had not heard anything
about the issue.
** NOTICE TO APPLE **
If you don't do anything about this, at least inform your genius team
that there might be a problem with this firmware update. It would be so
much better if I just knew that Apple was distributing information. If
you pull the update from your website, then you might want to inform
your genius team why you did that.
*****
In any case, the genius told me what I thought would be the case. My MBP
is out of warranty, and even though it wasn't my fault that the software
update broke my drive, I am probably responsible for fixing it. He
suggested calling AppleCare, determining what they say, then coming back
if I don't get a resolution.
I have a feeling I will be back in the Apple store in just a few days...

***** doesn't it? That is why I buy new every year to keep the

yet to own a single Mac that hasn't had to have some kind of warranty
work done. Not all the hardware in this computer is made by Apple, so of
course it will go bad... Just a matter of time! Good luck with the

Is there any point talking to an apple rep at the store? I'm in LA
right now - there's no point, is there.
I opened the whole bloody thing up yesterday, to take a look, and I have
a CD stuck in there right now, which ***** bigtime. Oh Apple. I really
hope you come to your senses and fix our problem. This really really
*****.

Mine was not under warranty. The replaced it. Go to the store, explain
its a known issue - show them the link to this thread. Give them a
chance to fix it.
Not much point getting in a tiz if you havent given them a chance to fix
it

Wow I am pretty stumped. My Superdrive went bad, reads, but doestn'
write right after the update 2.1 was pushed. One would hope that this is
not just coincedence and 'whomever' screwed this up will right the wrong
done. Do I smell recall?
So the big question? Has anyone restaged their machine? Outcome?

mine is bad too. I installed the firmware a few weeks ago. Didn't
realize that the drive has problem until today when I have to burn a
couple of CDS. The drive seems to be able to read CDS, haven't tried DVD
yet, but it can't burn neither CD or DVDs. I hope apple is putting their
**** together and deal with this.

MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo. After the Superdrive Update, I am still able to
READ CD and DVD but I can't burn anymore. Tried different brands without
success. Sometimes a new disk is just refused, sometimes the burning
process begins for a few seconds and then comes an error message.
In this last case, the disk cannot be used anymore on my iMac (PowerPC
G4 800 MHz) which otherwise burns everything without any problem.
A DVD burned on the iMac can be read on the MacBook Pro.
Seems this "upgrade" was a definitive "downgrade" !
Still under Applecare. Will call Apple tomorrow.

Spend one hour on the phone with Apple (MacBook Pro under Applecare
contract) . Nice and competent person walked me through all the usual
procedures (repare authorization, repare disk), PMU reset (remove
battery, power on), PRAM reset, new user account,...
No success; my Superdrive doesn't recognize new CD-R disks which are
perfectly usable on other computers (iMac G4 notably). No error message,
only a few noises for many seconds then disk ejected. BTW, all non
virgin disks can be read (CD, DVD..)
Conclusion: there is a hardware problem and my MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo
has to be sent in.
But first a complete backup, one never knows! in case somebody erases
the hard disk...

I think you will find the apple-created solution is that they give you a
new superdrive.
Take it to the store and point them to this thread.

I doubt very much they will replace my Superdrive if my 1 year warranty
has expired.
I would suggest an APPLE RECALL is in order!

Mine was out of warranty, but they still replaced it.
Depends how far out of warranty it is. Your mileage may vary.
But, you wont know if you dont try...

I am having the same problem. I did the update at the end of June and
was annoyed by the error saying it couldn't find anything to update. But
I have been able to play cds and dvds so I didn't think there was any
problem. Until today when I tried to backup my iTunes to dvds and it
said it couldn't do it. Now I'm really annoyed. And it doesn't seem like
there is any fix other than getting the superdrive replaced. Unless I
missed something. Did I miss anything? Anyone have any other solutions?
The Mac store isn't exactly convenient for me. Grrr.

i took my MBP to applecare 2 weeks ago and this is what they had to say:
Hi Daniel,
I did discuss the issue with Paul Damhuis from Applecare and feels there
is nothing he can do. Firstly he stated that apple does warn that
firmware upgrades are at your own risk and secondly the mac was
purchased so he cannot bend the rules even if he wanted to.
so im pretty ******* ****** off now, geezuz, next time im never going to
update anything. *****!

"firmware upgrades are at your own risk"?! ***?! This particular
firmware update has been recalled by Apple. Someone at Apple knows that
this firmware patch is killing SuperDrives. It's not like you or I did
something stupid in the process of applying their "Recommended" patch. I
say you go back and try again, and let them know that you will keep
trying till you get your drive repaired.
I spoke with AppleCare on the phone the other day, and the first tech
told me to download a Firmware Restore program that Apple had up on
their website, but it was for the Motherboard's firmware, not for the
SuperDrive's firmware. So, yeah, sometimes you run into Apple employees
that don't know enough about Apple Computers to be helpful.
When I called them a second time, the second tech I spoke to said that I
should take my computer into an Apple store, and that the Genius bar
will be able to repair my drive, even though my computer is out of
warranty by 2 months, because it is a know issue.
However, I have yet to take my computer in because I haven't had the
time.
