As for my view as to Steve's computer problems (as well as those that are
suffering the same symptoms) I subscribe to the view that a fix will
eventually be found and that it will almost certainly emanate from Apple!
What do you think those problems even are? Remember, I have been quite
specific:
* Keyboard: Steve did not recognize the caps lock symbol - it may have been
showing up from an OS error... but maybe not, Steve might have just hit it
on accident and is too embarrassed to admit to it. To his credit, however,
he did admit that as I have been saying it is the caps lock symbol he has
been seeing, so it is reasonable to give him the benefit of the doubt and
say it was the OS (others have reported similar problems). Overall Steve
was very confused on this issue and reported it as his keyboard generating
characters and all sorts of other things that simply did not happen as he
described.
* CD-burning: a small number of others have reported problems with this on
Leopard... Steve claimed to have a similar problem but could not quote or
paraphrase what error message or messages he claims to have gotten. Maybe
he has a CD or two not burn... maybe bad media or a hair in the drive or
something... maybe Steve just saw a report and made up a story about his
computer. Might be more but Steve sure gives no reason to believe so.
* Time Machine: Steve flip flopped on this and has claimed it was a
no-brainer and worked great... then said it did not. Maybe the drive he was
using was not formatted correctly or was bigger than 500 GB... there have
been reports of problems related to those issues. Reformat and upgrade to
10.5.1 and he should be fine, assuming he ever really had an issue. He may
have just read about this one and lied... we will never really know.
* Battery: Steve had a problem with his battery... likely it was badly in
need of recalibration. He claimed to not be able to recalibrate it but
could be a user issue there... he did not try the Apple suggested way (as he
could have with his original DVD if not with Leopard). Could also be a
battery that has just died. He also never, that I know of, tried the
battery with his boot DVD or Ubuntu or anything else to test if it was OS
related. With his poor troubleshooting skills and dishonesty hard to be
more sure of what is really happening.
As far as fixes (unlike you I do not think he should just sit on his rump
waiting for Apple to fix things for him... ):
* Just overall I would suggest he get and run YASU - does wonders for all
sorts of problems. Make sure you clear all caches and fix permissions. He
should also *correctly* reset the PMU if he has not.
* The above will likely fix the keyboard problem (and he has now learned
what the caps lock symbol is, so hopefully the user error problem will not
be repeated).
* CD-Burning: Steve needs to try to replicate it and figure out what the
error message is. If he cannot replicate it then the problem is solved - if
he can (and was not just lying in the first place) then once we have better
data we will know more.
* Time Machine: likely fix included in the problem description.
* Battery: try a *real* recalibration. Might fix it. Also see if the
problem exists with other OSs... again Steve's lack of ability to
troubleshoot and follow directions makes better suggestions hard.
