For those who doubt: <http://safari.oreilly.com/0735619743/ch13>

Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional Resource Kit,
Second Edition

A quick-format option is available during Windows XP
Professional Setup.

If the volume is already formatted and you are sure the disk
is not damaged, you can use this option during Setup to
decrease the time necessary to format the volume.

From the same site, but with a book on Vista (from Microsoft Press):

Perform A Quick Format Tells Windows Vista to format without
checking the partition for errors. With large partitions,
this option can save you a few minutes. However, it's usually
better to check for errors, which enables Disk Management to
mark bad sectors on the disk and lock them out.

I would be curious if there are similar references in relation to OS X
coming from Apple or anything Apple clearly endorses?

Thanks this should clear it up TOTALLY for anybody with mental abilities
exceeding those of a two year old.

Do you think there will be any effort to do either of the following:

A) show why the recommendations from a book from MS Press should
not be followed

B) show a similar set of recommendations for OS X from Apple or
an Apple endorsed source.

Seems those would be the *logical* methods of refutation, if someone
wanted
to debate against you. Instead I suspect Steve will focus on the idea
that
you have not found a reference in *one* 1500 page source where you have
said
you have read essentially the same thing.

I will admit I do not generally do a full format when I install an OS -
though I also generally do so when I am being paid by the hour. Under
that
circumstance, of course, one *should* balance technical and financial
considerations and do what they believe is the best for the client, even
if
that means not fully following best *technical* practices.

In the case of my own machine I installed Windows on a virtual drive - a
very different scenario in this regard.

These idiots will continue to ignore the irrefutable proof of the
superiority of the full format from a technical(if not cost) perspective.
I am predicting because they have had their asses kicked so hard that they
will come up with some kind of "problem" to argue about and take the heat
off of their utter defeat. They will try and move the goalposts over so
that they can attempt to "win" at something. Steve Carroll as you know is
a master at that. And De Mena is becoming more skilled all the time.
Zara of course is a braindead fly who needs a flyswatter taken to him.

John will now explain why he didn't bother to do a full format on his
Mac Pro after having championed the virtues of the error checking done
during full formats.

I love it;)

p.s. You beat me to it...
