Worked most of the afternoon on installing a 750 Gb secondThis proves what a STOOPID *** you really are. And it took you
harddisk in
my
Dell XPS 410 Vista system. It took about 20 minutes to install
the
disk and FOUR FUCKING hours to format it. Compare that to my Mac
Pro.
There I installed THREE 750 GB disks and had everything
operational in
TWELVE minutes.
TWENTY
minutes to plug in a drive? You're too stupid for words, Fucking
DUNCE.
, take the machine off the desk,Do you really have that little space on your desk that you can't just
turn the machine on its side?
open the unit, insert the drive,OMG! SO HARD!
Neatly configure theOh, yeah, bundling cables takes *ages*, John.

close the box, put it back on the desk andAlmost makes you wish you hadn't unnecessarily disconnected them all,

no?
configure the biosWhat exactly were you configuring? The machine should've
automatically picked up on the new disk and autoconfigured BIOS.

that the SATA port be enabled in Bios. In my case SATA 3 was
previously
deenabled as part of the default BIOS config and had to be reenabled in
order for the machine to "see" the drive.
configuration when I added a hard disk. Regardless, though, how long
does it take to update the disk configuration in BIOS? I'd also like
to note that installing the disk doesn't even require any tools since
it goes in a snap-in hard drive bracket. This shouldn't take 20
minutes, John, nor should any of this reflect badly on Dell PCs or
Vista. Instead, it reflects badly on *you*.
Me? No. I was just surprised that the BIOS in a modern XPS would
require changing BIOS settings to recognize a new SATA drive. I
looked up the manual and he was in fact correct. Doing that reminded
me that the XPS 410 uses snap-in hard disk caddies, though, making it
even easier than I had remembered to put a new disk in that machine.
Hmmm, I've personally have 2 Dells within the past 2 1/2 years that
didn't need to do ANYTHING in the bios. Plug the drive in and go.
But, according to Dell's manual
"If removing or installing the hard drive changes the drive
configuration, you must reflect the changes in the BIOS. Go to the
"Drives" section of the BIOS and under SATA 0 through 5, set the SATA
ports to the correct configuration."

I had the same thought as I also own a Dell and have worked on other
Dells, but as you pointed out, the documentation supports him. Seems
like a strange regression for Dell to put in their machines, no?
