<snip>I just had the pleasure [sic] of getting an HP back up at running it was
full of viruses and adware...half of the crap on the HP was adware that came
from the factory -- HP Help Center, 5 processes just for the bundled HP
printer, trialware from AOL and Yahoo. I took a clean copy of XP and just
re-installed it and found the drivers.
One of the things I like about Leopard is that it comes with *no* crap-ware
program that auto-runs. None. It does have a small amount of demo-ware but
*none* that runs when you log in... and what little demo-ware they have
makes sense. I wish HP and Dell would learn from that... though they sell
space on your hard dive to the highest bidder.
and i think it'd rock if apple would include some easily removed crap-ware and knock off a couple hundred bucks off a macbook. :P
Let's talk about easily removed crapware....
1. Saw that they had Adaware installed but the definition file was two years old. Tried to update the definition file but it couldn't access the Internet. However, IE could, but one of the four toolbars installed was blocking the ability to install the newest version.
2. Uninstalled the Yahoo toolbar (installed from the factory), the google toolbar, and websearch toolbar.
3. Uninstalled AOL and tried to uninstall Compuserve -- the computer hung each time.
4. Rebooted into Safe mode uninstalled Compuserve, uninstalled two components of Norton Internet Suite but the third component couldn't be uninstalled in safe mode.
5. Rebooted again uninstalled third component of Norton. Finally got the computer half way functional.
6. Backed up all of their files (hopefully) and used the restore disks -- which of course reformatted the disks and erased everything -- unlike the Mac where you get the option to archive and re-install.
7. Skipped the second CD installed with HP extras
8. The XP introductory/registration screen came up and after that was done, the install kept running and hung.
9. Rebooted again, install kept running and hung...I knew that a fully functional copy of XP was there but couldn't alt-ctl-del to get to task manager.
10. Rebooted into safe mode, ran msconfig and disable fbilm startup item.
11. Rebooted and used another computer to download drivers and transfer them with a usb thumb drive.
12. After I knew that the drivers worked...I re-installed a clean copy of XP and installed drivers to make sure no hint of HP/Compaq crapware was on the computer.
maybe you need to see my subsequent post to snit about whom i care less and less about. ;D
