When you plug a printer into XP it pops up an asinine dialog from the
"notification area". Why did he not mention that?

Because I installed the drivers and Plug and Play did not need to do
anything? Thought I explained that.

Plug and Play still kicks in with USB devices. Installing the drivers
just allows Plug and Play to find the correct drivers. The bubble
didn't appear because you plugged it in via a parallel port.

Aha. Fair enough... I almost never use anything but USB for local printers.
